Grounded 2: Everything Revealed About the July 29 Launch

Grounded 2 is officially coming, and it’s arriving sooner than expected—July 29. Obsidian Entertainment is teaming up with Eidos Montréal to deliver a much bigger survival experience. Set in Brook Hollow Community Park, Grounded 2 offers deeper systems, bug mounts called “Buggies,” new biomes, and a stronger narrative foundation. Here’s everything revealed so far.

A Bigger Map with Story-Driven Biomes

The action shifts from a backyard to the sprawling Brook Hollow Community Park, a world nearly three times the size of the first game’s map. In fact, the starting area alone matches the size of the entire original yard. This park was evacuated quickly after an explosion during a statue ceremony honoring the original four miniaturized teens—Max, Hoops, Willow, and Pete—who now return two years older in 1992.

The sudden evacuation left the park in disarray, creating chaotic and atmospheric biomes. A tipped-over ice cream cart becomes a frozen cave filled with Lovecraftian horror. A toxic underground zone, tainted by dumped chemicals, is inhabited by cockroaches—the only bugs able to survive it. These locations build on the original’s world-building while offering new environmental storytelling opportunities.

Combat Archetypes and Active Mutations

Grounded 2 introduces refined combat systems. Players can now choose specific archetypes: tanky warriors, venomous rogues, ranged hunters, and elemental mages. These roles are supported by both passive and newly added active mutations. For example, rogues can dual-wield daggers with mutations like Ambush, Assassin, and Cardio Fan for burst damage and mobility. Combat is no longer just about stats—it’s built around rock-paper-scissors mechanics using light, heavy, and blocking attacks.

Insects now dash, counter, and block in ways that make fights feel more strategic. New weapons like venom-infused daggers, frost-based staves, and one-handed maces increase variety and encourage unique builds. Obsidian aims to empower players to create “game-breaking” combos while balancing future updates based on community input.

Mounts with Personality: Buggies Are Here

Fan-requested mounts have finally arrived. Known as “Buggies,” these insects aren’t just transportation—they play active roles in combat, crafting, and exploration. Each Buggy type has unique abilities. Red Ant Soldiers can recruit worker ants for backup, carry gear, and assist in harvesting. Meanwhile, Orb Weaver spiders focus on high-speed offense with web entanglements and a stun scream that disorients enemies.

Only two mount types will be available at launch—Red Ant Soldiers and Orb Weavers—but more are planned post-release. Obsidian is also holding off on zipline systems initially to better balance movement and ensure Buggies feel impactful from the start.

Built for Co-Op and Long-Term Updates

Obsidian and Eidos Montréal designed Grounded 2 with co-op play at its core. Players can ride Buggies together, build bases, and explore biomes in sync. Base building now features new decorative options, while armor sets clearly communicate their functions to teammates during play.

Grounded 2 will launch in Game Preview, just like the original. A public roadmap will guide players through the upcoming updates, which will be larger and more complete than before. These updates will include new Buggies, biomes, gear, and balance changes based on feedback. Obsidian emphasizes that story will be much bigger from day one to match player expectations.
