Grand Theft Auto 6 is significantly expanding how police respond to Jason and Lucia, with crimes now involving witnesses, CCTV footage, suspect descriptions, vehicle trackers, and a new Heat system that shows what law enforcement actually knows about the player. Escaping will no longer be exclusively about breaking line of sight and waiting for wanted stars to disappear.
Rockstar’s approach makes evidence a major part of committing and escaping crimes. Players can potentially interfere with investigations by destroying security footage, changing clothes, abandoning identified vehicles, hiding weapons, and even separating Jason and Lucia during an escape.
GTA 6 Removes Police Markers From the Minimap
One of the biggest changes is how players locate approaching officers.
Police and enemy markers no longer appear normally on GTA 6’s minimap. Instead, Jason and Lucia can use the Focus ability to identify nearby threats, including detecting police through walls.
This removes some of the certainty found in previous GTA games, where the minimap provided a convenient overview of nearby law enforcement.
Police responses also depend more heavily on whether a crime has actually been detected and reported.
Authorities can reportedly be alerted through several methods, including:
- NPCs witnessing and reporting crimes
- Store and robbery alarms
- CCTV and other evidence
- Trackers installed in certain vehicles
This means committing an illegal act doesn’t necessarily result in an immediate, predictable police response. What happens depends partly on who witnessed it and what systems were triggered.
GTA 6’s Heat System Tracks What Police Know
The new Heat system works alongside GTA’s familiar wanted stars.
Rather than simply indicating how intensely police are pursuing Jason or Lucia, Heat provides information about the evidence law enforcement has gathered.
Police may know details such as:
- Jason or Lucia’s appearance
- Their clothing
- Weapons used during a crime
- Their getaway vehicle
- CCTV footage connecting them to the incident
The important difference is that players can respond to individual pieces of evidence.
If CCTV recorded the crime, destroying the footage could reduce the information available to investigators. If police know what the suspect is wearing, changing clothes becomes useful. If a getaway vehicle has been identified, switching cars can help disrupt the search.
Weapons can also be hidden, providing another way to distance the protagonists from evidence associated with a crime.
Separating Jason and Lucia Can Help During an Escape
GTA 6’s two-protagonist structure also plays directly into the new wanted mechanics.
When Jason and Lucia commit a crime together, splitting up during the escape can reportedly reduce the police response, potentially removing an entire wanted star in some circumstances.
That introduces a tactical choice absent from GTA 5’s standard police chases.
Rather than keeping both protagonists together and attempting to outrun the same group of officers, players may benefit from separating them and forcing police to divide their attention.
Combined with changing vehicles, clothing, and other identifying details, escaping becomes more about breaking the chain of evidence connecting the protagonists to the crime.
What the Different Wanted Stars Mean in GTA 6
Wanted stars now communicate more than the overall severity of the police response.
Their appearance changes depending on what stage of the search the player is currently in.
Solid white stars indicate that police currently have a direct line of sight on the player.
Flashing white stars appear after that direct line of sight has been broken, meaning officers are searching rather than actively watching the suspect.
Hollow stars indicate that a crime has been reported but police don’t yet have a description of the person responsible.
Red wanted stars appear when the player has escaped direct police pursuit but remains inside an active search area.
These states should make it easier to understand exactly why police are still looking for Jason or Lucia and what needs to happen before the pursuit ends.
At the highest wanted level, the search can reportedly expand across the entire GTA 6 map rather than remaining confined to a small area of Vice City.
Police Can Secure Crime Scenes After a Robbery
Police behavior also extends beyond chasing the player’s current position.
In a demonstrated store robbery, the clerk was incapacitated without being killed and the security footage was destroyed while the player searched for the safe combination.
But someone had already contacted law enforcement.
That forced the robbery to be abandoned before officers arrived and surrounded the building.
Police can also establish a perimeter around a recently robbed location, anticipating that the suspects could return. That means escaping the immediate response doesn’t necessarily reset the area to normal.
Returning to a crime scene too quickly could put Jason or Lucia straight back into contact with law enforcement.
Police Vehicles Have Useful Gear, but They’re Tracked
Police cars can contain valuable equipment, providing another temptation during encounters with law enforcement.
Vehicles may carry gear including:
- Shotguns
- Assault rifles
- Body armor
Stealing a police cruiser for its equipment or using one as a getaway vehicle comes with an obvious drawback: police vehicles have built-in trackers.
That makes simply stealing a cruiser and driving away a much less reliable escape strategy. Even after breaking visual contact, law enforcement may still have information leading directly to the vehicle.
Players will need to weigh the value of the equipment against the additional risk created by taking the car.
GTA 6 NPCs React Differently to Shootouts
Rockstar is also expanding civilian reactions during violent encounters.
NPCs won’t universally respond to gunfire by running directly away. Civilians who can’t safely escape may instead take cover behind walls, benches, police vehicles, and other nearby objects.
That should create more believable crime scenes while potentially affecting how witnesses and police responses develop.
A civilian trapped nearby could remain in the area rather than disappearing down the street, making the environment itself more important during a robbery or shootout.
Escaping Police Is About More Than Losing Wanted Stars
The combination of Heat, evidence, witnesses, search zones, and more informative wanted stars represents a major change from GTA’s traditional approach to law enforcement.
Driving quickly and breaking line of sight will still matter, but GTA 6 adds another layer: what do the police know?
If authorities have a vehicle description, switch cars. If they’ve identified the protagonists’ clothing, change outfits. If CCTV captured the crime, deal with the footage. If Jason and Lucia are both being hunted, separating them could reduce the pressure.
That could turn the aftermath of a robbery into an extension of the crime itself, with players actively dismantling the trail that connects Jason and Lucia to what happened instead of simply hiding until the stars disappear.
