The M4A1 in Ghost Recon: Wildlands is an excellent assault rifle for players who want a dependable weapon for both stealth and open combat. Better yet, you can collect it extremely early in the campaign if you’re willing to make a dangerous trip into Flor de Oro.
The M4A1 is located inside a weapon case at the Armadillo Hunting Lodge in Flor de Oro. While this is a high-threat province filled with dangerous Unidad forces, you don’t actually need to clear the area to claim the rifle.

Fortunately, there’s no requirement to complete missions in Flor de Oro before collecting the weapon.
How to Get the M4A1 Early
You can grab the M4A1 almost immediately after completing the early mission to rescue Amaru.
During the mission, you’ll have access to a helicopter near the cartel compound where Amaru is being held. After rescuing him, fly to the marked safe house and complete the objective as normal.
Instead of abandoning the helicopter afterward, use it to travel directly toward Flor de Oro.
The basic route is:
- Complete the mission to rescue Amaru.
- Keep the helicopter after dropping him off.
- Fly toward Flor de Oro.
- Head for the Armadillo Hunting Lodge.
- Land somewhere outside the immediate compound.
- Scout the lodge and locate the weapon case.
- Sneak past the Unidad soldiers.
- Open the case to unlock the M4A1.
You don’t need to eliminate the soldiers guarding the lodge. If your only objective is obtaining the rifle, avoiding combat is usually the safer option.
Watch Out for SAM Sites
Getting to Flor de Oro is arguably more dangerous than grabbing the M4A1 itself.
The region contains SAM sites capable of quickly destroying your helicopter if you’re detected at altitude. Hostile helicopters can also complicate the journey.
The safest approach is to fly low and use the terrain for cover.
Avoid cruising high above the landscape where anti-air systems have an easy shot. Staying relatively close to the ground can reduce your exposure while giving you opportunities to break line of sight if you’re detected.
Once you approach the Armadillo Hunting Lodge, land away from the main group of Unidad soldiers rather than dropping directly into the compound.
How to Sneak Into the Armadillo Hunting Lodge
After landing, use your drone or binoculars to scout the lodge before approaching.
Unidad soldiers are significantly more dangerous than ordinary Santa Blanca enemies, particularly for a character with limited upgrades. Starting a prolonged firefight this early in the game can quickly become overwhelming.
Instead, identify the guards between you and the M4A1 case and find a route around them.
The weapon case is located near the blue house and adjacent small shed. You only need enough time to reach the case and interact with it.
Once the M4A1 is unlocked, you can immediately leave the area. There’s no need to capture the lodge or defeat every Unidad soldier.
M4A1 Stats and Performance
The M4A1 is one of the most reliable general-purpose assault rifles in Ghost Recon Wildlands.
Compared with the starting P416, it offers improvements in several important areas, including:
- Higher damage
- Faster rate of fire
- Better accuracy
- Stronger overall combat performance
These advantages make the M4A1 particularly useful once enemies become harder to kill and firefights become more common.
During pure stealth gameplay, however, the difference between the M4A1 and P416 is less noticeable. A well-placed headshot against an unarmored enemy can already eliminate them quickly, so raw damage isn’t particularly important when every engagement goes according to plan.
