The Future Soldier outfit in Ghost Recon: Wildlands lets players recreate the high-tech appearance of the Ghosts from Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Future Soldier. Along with its recognizable tactical gear, the costume features an optical camouflage effect that makes your character appear nearly invisible.
However, the cloak isn’t as useful as it might initially seem. While it looks convincing, its effect in Wildlands is largely cosmetic and won’t suddenly turn you into an undetectable stealth operative.
Here’s how to get the Future Soldier outfit, equip it, and use its optical camouflage.
How to Get the Future Soldier Outfit in Ghost Recon Wildlands
The Future Soldier outfit can normally be obtained through the in-game Store, where it can be purchased using Credits. Depending on availability and promotions, players may also have opportunities to claim the outfit for free.
Finding store cosmetics is also easier following the Last Rites update, which removed the previous daily store rotation. Instead of waiting for the costume to appear randomly, you can browse the relevant store categories and look for the Future Soldier outfit directly.
Once it has been added to your account, you can equip it through the character customization menu.
How to Equip the Future Soldier Outfit
To equip the Future Soldier outfit:
- Open the Character menu.
- Select Edit Appearance in the lower-left corner.
- Open the Costumes tab.
- Find the Future Soldier outfit.
- Select it to equip the complete costume.
The important distinction here is that Future Soldier is treated as a Costume, not a collection of separate clothing pieces.
That means you cannot take individual components from the outfit and combine them with other Wildlands cosmetics. If you want the Future Soldier appearance, you’ll need to equip the complete costume.
How Future Soldier Optical Camo Works
The biggest attraction of the Future Soldier outfit is its built-in optical camouflage.
While wearing the costume, crouching or going prone automatically activates the cloaking effect. Your character becomes partially transparent, recreating the active camouflage technology featured prominently in Ghost Recon: Future Soldier.
The cloak remains active for as long as you stay crouched or prone. It can even remain visually active while firing suppressed weapons.
Standing up disables the effect.
In simple terms:
- Crouch: Optical camo activates
- Go prone: Optical camo activates
- Use a suppressed weapon: Camo can remain active
- Stand up: Optical camo deactivates
Unfortunately, looking invisible and actually being invisible are two very different things in Wildlands.
Does the Future Soldier Outfit Make You Invisible?
No. The Future Soldier outfit’s optical camouflage does not make you invisible to enemies.
Enemies can still detect you normally if you move into their line of sight. The camouflage also does not appear to provide a meaningful reduction to enemy detection speed.
This means you shouldn’t purchase the outfit expecting a major stealth advantage.
Even though your Ghost may look almost completely cloaked, Wildlands’ AI will continue reacting according to the game’s normal detection mechanics. Standing in an exposed position while cloaked can therefore still result in enemies spotting you.
The camouflage is better viewed as a visual feature designed to recreate the Future Soldier aesthetic rather than a functional stealth mechanic.
Does Optical Camo Work While Shooting?
The visual camouflage can remain active when firing suppressed weapons while crouched or prone.
This makes the costume particularly fitting for stealth-oriented gameplay, as you can remain visually cloaked while quietly eliminating enemies.
However, the camouflage still won’t prevent enemies from detecting you. Normal stealth rules remain in effect, so positioning, cover, weapon suppression, enemy awareness, and line of sight are far more important than the suit itself.
Future Soldier Outfit vs Optical Camo Backpack
The Future Soldier costume isn’t the only way to get an optical camouflage effect in Ghost Recon Wildlands.
Players can also obtain an Optical Camo Backpack associated with the Operation Silent Spade content. The backpack provides a similar visual cloaking effect without requiring you to wear the complete Future Soldier costume.
This makes the backpack a better choice if you want optical camouflage while retaining more freedom over your character’s appearance.
However, the same limitation applies: the backpack’s camouflage should not be treated as true invisibility. It provides the high-tech cloaking appearance but offers little practical advantage when it comes to avoiding enemy detection.
Is the Future Soldier Outfit Worth Getting?
The Future Soldier outfit is primarily worth getting if you’re a fan of Ghost Recon: Future Soldier or simply enjoy its futuristic military aesthetic.
Its automatic optical camouflage makes it one of Wildlands’ more distinctive costumes, especially when crouching, crawling, or using suppressed weapons during nighttime operations.
Just don’t expect the cloak to make stealth easier. Enemies can still detect you, and the costume doesn’t replace proper use of cover and positioning.
If you’re considering spending Credits solely because you expect the optical camouflage to provide a gameplay advantage, you’re better off saving them. For players who want to look like a Future Soldier Ghost while clearing out Santa Blanca bases, however, the outfit does exactly what it needs to visually.
