This week in gaming news, fans got their first look at a new game for the Nintendo Switch. Additionally, a report by Jason Schreier revealed the cancellation of two unannounced Sony games. Meanwhile, previews of Assassin’s Creed Shadows are underway, providing plenty of buzz for gaming enthusiasts.

Xbox Developer Direct: A Legendary Japanese IP in the Spotlight

An update on the upcoming Xbox Developer Direct stirred excitement as previously confirmed titles like South of Midnight, Clear Obscure, and Doomed: The Dark Ages showed great promise. However, the unrevealed fourth game remained the center of curiosity. According to journalist Jess Gordon, this mystery title will be a new installment in a legendary Japanese franchise with decades of history. While speculation initially pointed to Final Fantasy, Gordon clarified that the game is a brand-new title, not tied to any existing entries.

Excitingly, Gordon also teased that there might be more surprises in store, potentially including a new project from Double Fine.

Rebel Wolves’ Blood of the Dawn Walker: A Fresh Take on Vampire Narratives

This week marked the debut of Blood of the Dawn Walker, the first project by Rebel Wolves, a studio founded by former CD Projekt Red staff. The reveal trailer introduced protagonist Goen, whose life takes a dark turn after encountering a group of vampires. The story promises an engaging mix of personal vengeance and supernatural action as Goen uses his newfound vampiric powers to fight back and save his family.

The game’s unique day-and-night mechanics add depth to the gameplay, making Goen a fragile human by day and a powerful vampire by night. Players must also manage Goen’s blood hunger, which could have dire consequences for the narrative, such as accidentally consuming an important quest NPC. With open-ended questing systems and a ticking clock element, Blood of the Dawn Walker promises a compelling experience. A full gameplay reveal is scheduled for summer 2025.

Nintendo Switch 2: New Design and Features Unveiled (Gaming News)

The biggest gaming news of the week came from Nintendo, which unveiled the Nintendo Switch 2. The updated console boasts a larger build, a more flexible backstand for screen adjustments, and redesigned Joy-Cons with sleek black aesthetics. Notably, the Joy-Cons now include a feature that allows them to function as a computer mouse when flipped on their side. Nintendo has also addressed past concerns by designing the Joy-Cons to avoid the notorious stick drift issues.

In addition to the hardware, a snippet of gameplay revealed what appears to be the next Mario Kart entry. The track shown seems to be a new addition, with updated character designs and an expanded racer lineup of up to 24 participants—double the number in previous entries. Another exciting announcement is backward compatibility for digital and physical Nintendo Switch games, ensuring fans can enjoy favorites like Tears of the Kingdom on the new console, potentially with enhanced performance and graphics.

The Nintendo Direct scheduled for April 2nd will offer further details on the Switch 2 and its upcoming titles, making this an exciting time for Nintendo fans.

Cancellations and New Directions for Sony and Ubisoft

Jason Schreier reported the cancellation of two live-service games in development at Sony-owned studios Bend Studio and Bluepoint Games. Bend Studio had been working on a multiplayer project based on the systems of Days Gone, while Bluepoint’s canceled game was reportedly a live-service entry in the God of War franchise. These cancellations raise concerns about Sony’s live-service strategy, which has seen similar projects for Spider-Man and The Last of Us canceled in recent years.

Ubisoft, meanwhile, is grappling with internal challenges as rumors of a Tencent buyout circulate. Bloomberg reports that the companies are exploring a joint business venture that may involve moving Ubisoft’s IPs, like Rayman and Splinter Cell, to a new publishing studio. While this could improve Ubisoft’s standing, it also signals significant changes for the company.

Upcoming releases from Ubisoft include Assassin’s Creed Hexe, The Division 3, Beyond Good and Evil 2, and remakes of Splinter Cell and Assassin’s Creed Black Flag. The latter promises updated combat systems and new features beyond visual improvements, making it more than just a remake.
