Several notable live-service games are approaching the end of their lives, with Fortnite’s Rocket Racing, Final Fantasy 7 Ever Crisis, the PS4 version of Tower of Fantasy, and Destruction AllStars all scheduled to shut down or lose support before the end of 2026. Amazon’s New World: Aeternum will follow on January 31, 2027.
Some of these closures will make the affected games completely unplayable, while others only apply to a specific platform or mode. Players also have different options for preserving purchases and progress depending on the game.
Here are the major shutdowns currently scheduled.
| Game | Shutdown Date | What Is Ending? |
|---|---|---|
| Final Fantasy 7 Ever Crisis | October 6, 2026 | Full service |
| Fortnite Rocket Racing | October 2026 | Rocket Racing and related UEFN islands |
| Tower of Fantasy | October 20, 2026 | PS4 support only |
| Destruction AllStars | November 25, 2026 | Remaining single-player functionality |
| New World: Aeternum | January 31, 2027 | Full service |
Fortnite Rocket Racing Shuts Down in October 2026
Rocket Racing will leave Fortnite in October 2026, bringing Psyonix’s racing mode to an end after roughly two years.
Epic Games announced the shutdown on March 24 as part of broader changes to Fortnite’s collection of experiences. An exact October closure date hasn’t been announced yet.
Rocket Racing launched as one of Fortnite’s major standalone-style experiences and was developed by Psyonix, the studio behind Rocket League. It brought arcade racing into the Fortnite ecosystem while making vehicles and associated cosmetics usable across compatible experiences.
The mode struggled to maintain its initial momentum, however. Epic had already stopped releasing substantial themed updates for Rocket Racing in 2024, signaling a reduction in direct support.
Its closure follows other Fortnite mode changes in 2026, including the removal of Ballistic and Festival Battle Stage in April.
When Rocket Racing shuts down, UEFN islands created using Rocket Racing templates will also become unavailable.
There is some good news for players who invested in cosmetics. Items in the Vehicle Locker, including purchased or unlocked cars, decals, and wheels, will remain available in other compatible Fortnite experiences such as Battle Royale.
The Rocket Racing mode may be disappearing, but those vehicle cosmetics aren’t being removed with it.
Final Fantasy 7 Ever Crisis Ends on October 6
Final Fantasy 7 Ever Crisis will shut down on October 6, 2026, just over three years after its original release.
Square Enix announced the end of service on July 7.
Before the servers close, Ever Crisis received its final story chapter on September 6, allowing its ongoing narrative to reach an ending before the game becomes unavailable.
Ever Crisis attempted to bring together different parts of the Final Fantasy 7 universe in a single mobile RPG. Its story incorporated material from the original game and the wider FF7 timeline while also exploring previously unseen events, including more of Sephiroth’s past.
The game stood out visually, but its mobile RPG structure proved more divisive. Progression relied heavily on upgrading weapons, navigating numerous systems, and repeating battles, with automated combat playing a significant role.
Its shutdown adds Ever Crisis to a growing list of discontinued Final Fantasy mobile projects, following games such as Mobius Final Fantasy and Final Fantasy 7: The First Soldier.
Players have until October 6 to experience the remaining content before service ends.
Tower of Fantasy Ends PS4 Support on October 20
Tower of Fantasy isn’t shutting down completely, but its PlayStation 4 version will stop receiving support on October 20, 2026.
Perfect World announced the decision on March 9, citing performance optimization challenges and application-size restrictions on Sony’s older hardware.
This means the open-world RPG will continue operating on newer supported platforms. The shutdown specifically affects PS4.
Players moving forward aren’t necessarily starting from scratch, either. Existing progress can continue through other supported versions, while eligible items purchased but not claimed on PS4 can be collected through the PS5 version.
The decision follows a broader problem facing long-running cross-generation live-service games. As titles grow through years of new maps, characters, systems, and visual upgrades, supporting older hardware can become increasingly difficult.
Tower of Fantasy originally launched globally in 2022 and continues to receive content updates. Zoey is scheduled to join the roster on September 15, shortly before PS4 support ends.
For players on PS5, PC, and mobile, Tower of Fantasy itself is continuing.
Destruction AllStars Becomes Completely Unplayable November 25
Destruction AllStars will reach its final shutdown on November 25, 2026.
The process has already begun.
Online multiplayer servers were permanently taken offline on May 26, 2026, removing the core competitive component of Lucid Games’ vehicular action title.
The remaining single-player functionality will stop working on November 25. At that point, Destruction AllStars will effectively become unplayable.
The game had a difficult history almost from launch.
Originally positioned as a full-price PS5 release, Destruction AllStars ultimately launched through PlayStation Plus. Despite the increased accessibility, it struggled to establish a sustainable multiplayer audience.
AI-controlled opponents were later introduced to help populate matches when enough human players couldn’t be found.
Its final closure makes Destruction AllStars another example of the preservation problems surrounding online-dependent games: once the required services disappear, even players who still have the software installed can lose access to the experience entirely.
New World: Aeternum Shuts Down January 31, 2027
The largest upcoming closure on the list arrives slightly later.
Amazon Games will shut down New World: Aeternum on January 31, 2027.
The closure was announced on January 15, 2026, giving players more than a year of notice before the servers disappear.
New World originally launched as Amazon’s ambitious MMORPG before eventually being repositioned as New World: Aeternum, expanding its audience and placing greater emphasis on its action-RPG qualities.
That reinvention wasn’t enough to secure its long-term future.
The game’s final major content release arrived with the Nighthaven update in October 2025. No comparable expansion is planned before the January shutdown.
Players can still experience the game during its remaining months, and its expansions are now unlocked, making the final stretch an opportunity to explore content that might previously have been missed.
Unlike Tower of Fantasy’s PS4 closure, however, this isn’t simply the retirement of an older version. When New World: Aeternum reaches January 31, its service will end.
Which Game Is Shutting Down First?
Of these five closures, Final Fantasy 7 Ever Crisis is currently scheduled to go first on October 6, 2026.
Rocket Racing will follow sometime during October, although Epic hasn’t announced its exact final day. Tower of Fantasy’s PS4 support ends October 20, and Destruction AllStars becomes completely unavailable November 25.
New World: Aeternum then closes on January 31, 2027.
For anyone still playing these games, the distinction between a platform retirement and a complete shutdown is important. Tower of Fantasy players can migrate away from PS4, while Rocket Racing players retain compatible vehicle cosmetics elsewhere in Fortnite. Destruction AllStars, Ever Crisis, and eventually New World face a much more definitive end.
With several shutdowns clustered into the final months of 2026, players interested in revisiting any of them have a narrowing window to do so before their respective services disappear.
