The Sprite Locator is a special Gizmo in Fortnite that helps you uncover hidden Buried Sprite Chests. When activated, it reveals the location of a chest that only you can see, giving you a chance to collect a new Sprite or add another one to your collection.
Here’s how to unlock the Sprite Locator and use it effectively.
How to Unlock the Sprite Locator
The Sprite Locator is earned through Sprite Mastery.
To unlock it, you’ll need to reach Mastery Rank 5 on 17 different Sprites. One of the quickest ways to level your Sprites is by using Quack Snacks, which grant +1 Sprite Level for 1,500 Gold.
Keep in mind that reaching the maximum Sprite level isn’t enough—you’ll also need to extract each fully leveled Sprite to earn its Mastery Rank.
After unlocking Mastery Rank 5 on 17 Sprites, you’ll receive three Sprite Locators, which are added directly to your inventory.
How to Use the Sprite Locator
Once you’re in a match:
- Hold Triangle to open the Gizmo Wheel.
- Select the Sprite Locator from the left side of the wheel.
- The item temporarily replaces your Pickaxe.
- Hold R2 to activate it.
- Wait for the three-second countdown to finish.
When the countdown ends, the location of a Buried Sprite Chest appears on your map.
Finding the Buried Sprite Chest
The revealed chest is visible only to you, so other players won’t see its location or be able to race you to it.
Follow the on-screen marker until you reach the buried chest. You’ll notice a Sprite hologram floating above the dig site, indicating which Sprite is waiting inside.
To open the chest:
- Switch back to your Pickaxe.
- Strike the marked dirt patch.
- Dig up the Buried Sprite Chest.
- Collect the Sprite inside.
What Happens If You’re Eliminated?
Although other players can’t see your Buried Sprite Chest, you can still lose the reward if you’re eliminated before opening it.
If you’re defeated after using the Sprite Locator but before digging up the chest, both the Sprite Locator and the Sprite inside the chest are lost.
Because Sprite Locators are consumed when activated, it’s best to use them only when the surrounding area is relatively safe.

The Sprite Locator is one of the most reliable ways to discover hidden Buried Sprite Chests, making it especially valuable for players working toward completing their Sprite collection. Since the chest is instanced specifically for you, there’s no competition from other players once it’s revealed. Just be sure to secure the area before activating the item so you don’t lose both the Locator and its reward if you’re eliminated.
