Final Fantasy Tactics released almost 30 years ago on the PlayStation, and between now and then, its reputation as a classic entry in the franchise has only grown. But access to the game has always been tricky. The original PlayStation version skipped Europe, and the War of the Lions port stayed on the PSP before making its way to iOS and Android. Now, Final Fantasy Tactics: The Evilly Chronicles finally brings the strategy RPG to all major platforms worldwide.
This version includes both a classic remaster of the PlayStation release and an enhanced edition full of quality-of-life upgrades, giving fans a choice between nostalgia and modernization.
Script Changes in The Evilly Chronicles
The Evilly Chronicles features two scripts depending on which mode is chosen. Classic mode uses the PSP’s War of the Lions script, originally shaped by Tom Slattery, Joseph Reeder, Philip Bright, and Michael-Christopher Koji Fox. This version included character renames like Argath and Tietra, and those remain in place.
Enhanced mode, meanwhile, builds on that script but updates dialogue for voice acting. Yasumi Matsuno, the original director, explained that the transition from text-only to spoken lines required a near-complete rework. Some phrases were adjusted for emotion and flow, and even the final line of the game has been rewritten after feedback from Ramza’s Japanese voice actor, Shinnosuke Tachibana. These subtle but important changes make the story feel more natural when performed aloud.
Gameplay Adjustments and New Options
Combat has been modernized with several new tools. Players can now preview maps before fights, swap jobs and equipment beforehand, and even reset turns if mistakes are made. A new tactical view flattens the battlefield for better clarity, while markers can be placed to track enemy ranges.
Difficulty settings—Squire, Knight, and Tactician—offer flexibility for both newcomers and veterans. Tactician is closest to the original’s challenge, though with adjusted AI and less room for broken strategies like abusing the Calculator job. Random encounters can now be avoided or restarted, and consecutive battle lockouts have been removed, reducing frustration.
Quality-of-life touches include saving mid-battle, fast-forward options, and redesigned menus like a job tree that helps visualize progression. Jobs and abilities have been rebalanced, making some skills easier to unlock while raising the cost of others.
Visuals, Extras, and What’s New
Graphically, the game has been rebuilt for modern systems, with sharper character models, improved lighting, and an updated world map. Unlike other Square Enix remasters, the soundtrack remains untouched, preserving the original’s iconic sound.

The Evilly Chronicles also restores Japan-only content cut from the PlayStation release: the sound novels. These short stories add world-building without altering the main plot. Another addition is the State of the Realm feature, borrowed from Final Fantasy XVI, which helps players track political intrigue and character involvement through visual summaries. A large glossary updates alongside the story, ensuring no detail gets lost.
