Every Zero Build Change in Fortnite Act 3 Explained

Fortnite Zero Build Changes in v40.40 Act 3 | Every New Item, Mechanic Overhaul, Pocket Item Cooldowns, and Meta Shift Explained for PC, Console, and Mobile Players

The Fortnite v40.40 update dropped on May 14, 2026, and it is the single biggest overhaul to Zero Build mode since the mode launched back in March 2022. Epic Games confirmed these changes are part of an ongoing experiment, and player reactions will directly influence the direction of Zero Build heading into Chapter 7 Season 3 and beyond.

Fortnite v40.40: Zero Build Overhaul Tracker

Category Feature / Item Details Tactical Advice
New Slot Pocket Item Unlimited use; replaces “Build” button. Default: Shockwave (30s CD). Swap for Med Mist or Bubble at Vending Machines.
Mechanic Overshield Siphon Eliminations instantly refill Overshield. Rewards aggressive “entry” play; use this to survive third parties.
Movement Infinite Stamina Only active while holding Pickaxe. Use this for rotations; swap to weapons only when approaching cover.
Combat Tracer Pistols Dual-wield with 3 Dash charges + Rewind. Best for close-range “blink” plays; weak at long distances.
Support Mercy Staff Heals shields & boosts ally damage. A “Must-Have” for squads; pairs perfectly with an aggressive Tank.
Survival “Splat” Mechanic Fall damage drops you to 1HP (Unranked). You can’t die from falls, but you’ll be vulnerable. Use Glider Redeploy to avoid the stun.
Loot Brick-a-Bunker Reinforced Port-a-Bunker (Brick). Stacks up to 2; prioritize these for end-game high-ground holds.

Starting Loadout: Pistol, Shield, and a Pocket Item

Every player now begins each match with three things: a Pistol, a Small Shield Potion, and a Pocket Item. This replaces the empty-handed start that had been the Zero Build standard for over four years.

The pistol is not a standard loot pool weapon — it’s a unique starter item designed specifically for early-game pinches. It is weaker than pistols you’ll find on the ground and is not intended to carry you into late game. Once you drop or swap it, it does not return to the ground as a lootable item.

Pocket Items: The Build Button Replacement

The most significant structural change is that the Build button has been replaced by the Pocket Item slot. These are unlimited-use utility items — the key limitation is their cooldown timer, not a finite supply.

Three Pocket Items are available at launch, obtainable or swappable at Vending Machines around the map:

  • Shockwave Grenade — 30-second cooldown; all players start every match with this by default

  • Med Mist Grenade — 35-second cooldown; heals white health

  • Shield Bubble (Large) — 40-second cooldown; provides a large deployable shield bubble

These do not stack — you get one use and then wait out the cooldown. You do not receive your Pocket Item immediately upon landing; there is a brief delay after jumping from the Battle Bus before it becomes available.

Overshield Siphon on Eliminations

Zero Build now features Overshield Siphon: getting an elimination instantly restores your Overshield. In team modes, this triggers on final eliminations, not knocks. Your base health and regular shield are not affected — only the Overshield refills automatically.

This is designed to reward aggressive play and give players a slightly better chance of surviving third-party situations immediately after a fight.

Glider Changes: Manual Cut and Redeploy

Two notable glider changes arrived with this update:

  • Manual Glider Cut — Instead of your glider auto-deploying near the ground, you can now manually cut it and free-fall the final stretch. You can re-deploy your glider after cutting it, giving you precise control over your drop timing and landing spot.

  • Glider Redeploy — Returning as a base feature (not an item or augment), players can redeploy their glider from elevated positions to rotate across the map and avoid fall damage.

Fall Damage Overhaul: Splat, Not Death

Fatal fall damage has been removed from all unranked matches in both Build and Zero Build modes. A fall that would have previously eliminated you now triggers a “Splat!” animation, drops your health to 1 HP, removes all shields and Overshield, and leaves you briefly vulnerable as your character gets back up.

Fall damage as a mechanic still exists — it just can no longer outright eliminate you in unranked play.

Movement Buff: Unlimited Stamina With Pickaxe

Holding your Pickaxe now grants unlimited Stamina, letting you sprint freely across the map without draining your stamina bar. This is a traversal buff designed to encourage faster rotations between fights.

Cover Durability Increased

Environmental structures — trees, boulders, sheds, and similar natural or man-made cover — now take significantly less damage from weapons. This directly buffs defensive play in Zero Build, where players cannot build their own cover.

Faster Rebooting

Reboot Van timers have been reduced, allowing squads to revive eliminated teammates more quickly than before. This is a quality-of-life improvement aimed at keeping teams intact during matches.

New Zero Build-Exclusive Items

A wave of new items entered the Zero Build loot pool alongside this update:

  • Brick-a-Bunker — A reinforced, brick-based replacement for the Port-a-Bunker. Stacks up to two, common rarity

  • Improved Smoke Grenades — Create a smoke cloud to disrupt enemy lines of sight

  • Guardian Shield — Unvaulted and returned to the loot pool

  • Bush Consumable — Camouflages your character and absorbs one shot’s worth of damage

  • Shrub Bomb — A throwable version that applies the bush effect to yourself upon detonation

Overwatch Collaboration Items (v40.40)

The v40.40 update also introduced Overwatch heroes into Battle Royale, bringing two new crossover weapons:

  • Tracer Pistols — Dual-wield automatic pistols that switch to first-person view when equipped. They feature a dash ability (activated mid-air) with up to three charges that recharge over time, plus a Rewind ability tied to the aim-down-sights button that repositions you to a previous location. Strong at close range; weak at distance.

  • Mercy Staff — Heals your shield (and your teammates’) by firing it. The ADS button boosts a teammate’s damage output. Can be found through regular looting and from Overwatch Loot Boxes around the map.

A new Overdrive Pulse Rifle was also introduced, found in Overwatch Loot Boxes scattered near Overwatch-themed mini POIs that replaced some factories and gas stations across the map. The pulse rifle gives the Overdrive effect while equipped (unlimited sprint, floaty jump), though it has noticeable bloom.

Rivalry Board Changes

The Rivalry Boards received a loot update:

  • Exotics have been replaced by the Mythic Seven Power Gloves, which now have 40 uses (up from 20) and cost 90 Rivalry Coins

  • The Heal slot now has a chance to spawn Overdrive Grenades (a stack of four) in addition to regular healing items
