Endless Legend 2 has finally arrived after more than a decade of waiting since the first game. This release enters early access and feels like a faithful continuation of Amplitude Studios’ fantasy 4X strategy. Fans of the studio’s broader catalog, including Humankind, will find a familiar but polished style here.
The game introduces a dynamic seasonal system with sunny days, intense monsoons, and destructive tidefalls. These cycles expand exploration and reshape territories in compelling ways. Fresh resources, wonders, and independent factions emerge as the world shifts, giving each campaign a sense of discovery.
Endless Legend 2 Factions and Gameplay
At launch, five factions are available, each built with distinct themes. Examples include the Last Lords with an economic focus and the Necrophage warmongers that harvest corpses and limit themselves to a single city. This asymmetry means no two factions play alike, and their unique mechanics add depth to every match.
However, on larger maps, duplicate factions must be included due to the limited roster. Independent factions provide some differentiation, and their assimilation introduces new layers of strategy, but more variety will clearly be needed as development continues.
City-building follows the foundation and district system, where influence expands claims and adjacency bonuses drive optimization. Improvements, unit training, and population management add complexity without overwhelming players familiar with the genre.
Combat, Heroes, and Strategy Layers
Combat plays out on the overworld in a tactical, turn-based format. Units benefit from elevation, positioning, and both passive and active skills. Players can choose between manual control or autoresolve, with options to adjust animation speed for smoother pacing.
Heroes bring another strategic layer. They gain points to unlock skills, passive perks, or active abilities that shift battles and exploration. Equipment collected through quests or combat can be assigned to heroes, who also weave into the game’s lore with biographies, rivalries, and alliances. Their presence ties mechanics into storytelling in a natural way.
Faction-specific mechanics, like scientific observatories or glassification terrain effects, reinforce unique identities. Councils and empire-wide abilities push this asymmetry further, often at the cost of balance, but in ways that feel deliberate and entertaining.
Early Access Limitations and Victory Paths
The victory system offers three main pathways: Worship, Mastery, and Impress. Worship demands population growth, monuments, and full tech research. Mastery favors territorial conquest and clearing fortresses. Impress relies on resources and swaying opinions of rivals or independent factions. Currently, Impress is noticeably easier to achieve, making victories feel unbalanced.

Other limitations include a lack of custom faction creation, restricted game setup options, and UI quirks that affect city management. Early access transparency is appreciated, though, with Amplitude openly framing the current build as incomplete and promising more updates ahead.
Despite missing features and unbalanced victories, Endless Legend 2 already delivers a strong fantasy 4X experience. The map design, seasonal world mechanics, and faction asymmetry provide a foundation that fans have long wanted. With more factions, balance tweaks, and expanded features, it has the potential to become a defining entry in Amplitude’s strategy legacy.
