Dragon’s Dogma 2 is heading into its Dark Arisen expansion with major performance and quality-of-life improvements that remove some of the RPG’s most frustrating mechanics without necessarily making its combat easier. Capcom’s latest changes include a cure for Dragonsplague, additional save slots, expanded weapon skill options, Pawn adjustments, equipment filters, and numerous fixes.
The timing is significant. Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen launches October 9, 2026, the same day the game arrives on Nintendo Switch 2. With a major expansion and a new platform on the horizon, Capcom appears increasingly willing to reconsider systems that created inconvenience rather than meaningful challenge.
Dragon’s Dogma 2 Gets Another Major Update
Dragon’s Dogma 2 launched in 2024 with an ambitious open world but significant technical problems across PC and consoles.
It was also Capcom’s first open-world project built with the RE Engine, and performance quickly became one of the biggest criticisms surrounding the game. Two years of patches have gradually improved the situation, with the latest update delivering another noticeable performance boost.
The more interesting changes, however, affect the RPG’s underlying systems.
Among the latest additions and improvements are:
- A new Dragonsbaulk Draught that cures Dragonsplague
- More save slots
- Equipment favoriting and filtering
- An option to skip the opening sequence on new playthroughs
- Numerous Pawn adjustments
- Six assignable weapon skills instead of four
- Quest and general gameplay bug fixes
Taken together, these changes reduce some of the friction that has surrounded Dragon’s Dogma 2 since launch.
Dragonsplague Finally Has a Proper Cure
The Dragonsbaulk Draught may be one of the most important additions.
Dragonsplague is an unusual mechanic in which infected Pawns can eventually transform into dragons and devastate the town where the party is staying. The resulting attack can kill large numbers of NPCs, including merchants and characters associated with quests.
It creates genuine consequences, but dealing with the disease hasn’t always been particularly intuitive or enjoyable.
Before the new item was introduced, players had limited options for removing Dragonsplague. Dismissing an infected Pawn could solve the problem, while another infamous approach involved throwing the Pawn into the Brine.
Neither feels like a conventional cure.
Dead NPCs can also be revived using Wakestones, but those aren’t resources players necessarily want to spend repairing the aftermath of an avoidable Dragonsplague outbreak.
The Dragonsbaulk Draught provides a straightforward solution while preserving the underlying mechanic. Dragonsplague can still create tension, but players now have an appropriate tool for dealing with it.
More Save Slots Remove Another Unnecessary Restriction
Expanded save slots address another long-standing complaint.
Dragon’s Dogma 2 originally took a deliberately restrictive approach to saving, reinforcing the idea that decisions and mistakes should carry consequences.
Consequences can make an RPG more engaging, but limiting basic save functionality doesn’t automatically make its quests, exploration, or combat more demanding.
More save slots give players additional control over their adventures without removing the challenges found throughout the world itself.
The same philosophy applies to smaller additions such as equipment favorites and filters. These features don’t make enemies weaker or encounters easier; they simply reduce the amount of time spent wrestling with menus.
Six Weapon Skills Could Have a Major Impact on Combat
Capcom is also expanding the number of assignable weapon skills from four to six.
Unlike the interface improvements, this change has more direct implications for combat.
Two additional skill slots provide considerably more flexibility when building an Arisen, allowing players to carry a broader selection of offensive, defensive, or utility abilities without making as many compromises.
That could become especially important when Dark Arisen introduces new challenges.
Pawn behavior has also received sweeping adjustments, while numerous quest and gameplay bugs have been addressed ahead of the expansion.
Dragon’s Dogma 2 Already Made Fast Travel Easier
The latest update isn’t the first sign that Capcom is reconsidering some of Dragon’s Dogma 2’s more stubborn design decisions.
A major update in June 2026 introduced the Eternal Ferrystone, giving players access to a dedicated fast-travel option.
Restricted travel was originally an important part of Dragon’s Dogma 2’s philosophy. Journeys were supposed to matter, with dangerous encounters and unexpected events occurring as players traveled between locations.
That’s an interesting design goal, but forcing players to repeatedly cover familiar territory can eventually stop creating meaningful adventures and start creating downtime.
The Eternal Ferrystone provides more flexibility without removing the option to travel normally for players who prefer the original experience.
Difficulty and Frustration Aren’t the Same Thing
Dragon’s Dogma 2 is at its best when difficulty emerges naturally from its systems.
Fighting an enormous monster while low on resources, surviving an expedition after nightfall, or dealing with an unexpected encounter can create memorable challenges. These situations test preparation, combat knowledge, and improvisation.
Menu inconvenience, restrictive saving, or having no conventional treatment for a dangerous status condition are different.
Removing those obstacles doesn’t necessarily make Dragon’s Dogma 2 an easier RPG. Instead, it allows more of the difficulty to come from combat, exploration, resource management, and decision-making.
Capcom’s recent updates suggest the studio has become more comfortable distinguishing between the two.
Dark Arisen Could Give Dragon’s Dogma 2 a Second Chance
All these changes arrive immediately before the game’s biggest test since its original launch.
Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen releases October 9, bringing a major expansion to the open-world RPG. Dragon’s Dogma 2 also launches for Nintendo Switch 2 on the same date.
Capcom has therefore spent 2026 addressing both technical and mechanical complaints before bringing a new wave of players into the game.
The expansion will ultimately determine whether Dragon’s Dogma 2 can achieve the comeback its recent updates have been building toward. But adding a proper Dragonsplague cure, expanding save options, improving fast travel, and cutting down unnecessary friction puts the base game in a much stronger position than it occupied at launch.
Dragon’s Dogma 2 doesn’t need to stop being difficult. Its latest updates show that Capcom increasingly understands it can remain demanding without making every inconvenience part of the challenge.
