Your starting monster in Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World is determined by two choices: whether you select Bianca or Nera as your protagonist and how you answer Fluffy’s three-question personality quiz. There are eight possible starter monsters in total, with four available to each character.

Does Choosing Bianca or Nera Change Your Starter?
Yes. Your protagonist choice determines which group of four monsters you can receive from the personality quiz.
Bianca can start with:
- Woebergine
- Vegandragora
- Imp
- Wax Murderer
Nera can start with:
- Small Fry
- Buddy Slime
- Sham Hatwitch
- Fromage Fray
This means answering the same way doesn’t necessarily produce the same monster.
For example, answering No, No, No gives Bianca a Vegandragora but gives Nera a Small Fry. Similarly, Yes, Yes, Yes results in Wax Murderer for Bianca and Fromage Fray for Nera.
How to Get the Starter Monster You Want
Decide which monster you want before finishing the opening sequence, then make sure you’ve selected the protagonist associated with it.
From there, answer Fluffy’s three questions using the corresponding combination in the tables above.
