Diablo IV Patch 2.3.1 Fixes Altars, Butcher Drops, and More

Blizzard has revealed the full notes for Diablo IV Patch 2.3.1, which went live on Tuesday, July 15. While most of the update revolves around bug fixes, it also introduces game-changing quality-of-life improvements, key loot updates, and substantial buffs across several classes. Here’s a complete breakdown of the highlights.

Infinite Pit Keys and Glyph Farming Updates

The standout change in Patch 2.3.1 is how Pit Keys work. After completing Tier 70, players will now receive Artificer Stones back in return:

  • Tiers 70–84 return 2–3 stones

  • Tiers 85–99 return 4–6

  • Tiers 100+ return 8–9

This essentially creates an infinite loop for players farming the Pit—especially if you can reliably clear Tier 85+. That means Paragon Glyph grinding just became far more sustainable, especially once your character is already fully geared. This shift makes the Pit the endgame’s central farming location for the foreseeable future.

Myriad Stone and XP Globe Rework in Nightmare Dungeons

The Myriad Stone, a new Horadric Jewel, now buffs attack speed to the cap. This will affect build optimizations for players trying to hit key breakpoints, particularly for high-speed farming or attack-triggered procs.

Meanwhile, XP Globes in Nightmare Dungeons have received two big changes:

  1. Globe XP is now shared across the party instead of going to the player who picks it up.

  2. XP globes now spawn more reliably and offer more experience, though Blizzard didn’t give exact numbers.

These tweaks aim to make Nightmare Dungeons a viable leveling route from level 1 to 60 and potentially even a decent Paragon option. However, the value compared to Pit runs will depend on how much XP these globes now grant.

Legion Events and Salvage Material Buffs ( Diablo IV)

Blizzard is reviving Legion Events by buffing material drops, including Forgotten Souls and legendary crafting materials, especially on Torment difficulty. Previously, these events were mostly skipped due to inefficient loot, but with the updated drop rates, they may now become a go-to for farming key resources.

Similarly, the Material Hoard (previously underwhelming) now provides valuable salvage materials and souls, creating more loot loop variety for players. These updates give non-boss events a reason to exist again in late-game farming cycles.

Build Buffs: Sorcerer, Rogue, and Necromancer Gain Ground

Several classes received notable buffs—some minor, some major:

  • Sorcerer: Frozen Orb and Ice Shards now deal increased damage, though they still lag behind top builds like Ice Shards with Azurewrath.

  • Rogue: Flurry builds received significant enhancements, making them more viable across late-game content.

  • Necromancer: Golem builds got another wave of buffs following recent improvements, potentially pushing them into the meta.

  • Druid: Razor Wings, Stinger, and Payback passives received moderate buffs, while the Polarize build—already strong—was buffed again and may now rank top two in the meta.

  • Barbarian: Minor buffs hit Rend, Double Swing, Thorns, Whirlwind, and Meteor. The Battle Frenzy Amulet now gives 60% bonus damage (up from 30%) and a higher chance for Frenzy stacks. It’s ideal for early-game setups but may not shake up the meta.

Bug Fixes: Altars, Equipment Dells, and Butcher Loot ( Diablo IV)

This patch also fixes several lingering bugs:

  • Altars of Lilith quest bug now allows correct Altarite collection.

  • Equipment Dells now function as intended with faster channeling and improved loot.

  • The Butcher now properly drops loot when spawned.

  • Anomaly weapon-swapping bugs and UI glitches tied to Horadric Strong Rooms have been patched.

Blizzard also confirmed continued efforts on performance, stability, and visual fixes, which should result in smoother gameplay across the board.

What’s Next?

While Patch 2.3.1 brings plenty of improvements, some unresolved issues remain—such as the Polarize puddle bug and Spearborn fix delays. However, Blizzard is expected to follow up with another update soon, based on recent patch cadence trends.
