2027 Is Going to Be Huge for Diablo 5

Diablo 5 may not launch until 2029, but Blizzard plans to make 2027 a major year for the next installment by regularly sharing its development progress with players. Starting next year, the studio intends to reveal features as they take shape, discuss the ideas guiding development, and use community feedback to help shape the final game.

The approach means Diablo fans won’t have to wait until the months immediately before release to learn how the sequel is evolving. It also gives Blizzard plenty of time to demonstrate how Diablo 5’s fallen version of Sanctuary differs from previous entries.

Blizzard Will Start Showing Diablo 5 Development in 2027

Diablo 5 was one of the biggest surprises from the BlizzCon 2026 opening ceremony, even with its distant 2029 release target.

Blizzard acknowledged that the game remains early in development, but it doesn’t plan to keep the project behind closed doors for the next several years.

Beginning in 2027, the Diablo team plans to provide regular updates covering features currently being developed, the design ideas influencing the game, and its broader progress.

Community feedback will also play a role.

By showing systems earlier, Blizzard hopes to make more informed development decisions while preserving elements fans associate with Diablo and introducing new ideas for the series.

That makes 2027 effectively the beginning of Diablo 5’s extended road to launch rather than simply another year of development happening out of public view.

Diablo Has Already Won in Diablo 5

Blizzard is also making a major change to the series’ usual narrative setup.

Diablo has already won.

Rather than beginning with Sanctuary preparing for another demonic threat, Diablo 5 takes place in a world where the Lord of Terror has seemingly succeeded in conquering it. The heroes who came before have failed, leaving the player to survive the aftermath.

Players take on the role of the Heir to Westmarch, tasked with dealing with a Sanctuary that has already been broken and is continuing to transform.

That premise gives Blizzard an opportunity to make the world itself a more active part of the game.

Sanctuary Can Change as You Play

Diablo 5’s world won’t necessarily remain static as players explore it.

Blizzard says enemies, points of interest, and parts of the world itself can change dynamically, reinforcing the idea that Sanctuary is actively being reshaped rather than simply waiting for players to clear predetermined threats.

The game is also changing how players interact with traditional safe areas.

Instead of relying primarily on towns as permanent hubs, players will assemble a caravan of allies that travels alongside them.

These characters can serve as vendors and companions, effectively bringing some of the functions normally associated with Diablo’s settlements onto the road.

The system fits the game’s larger premise: Sanctuary has fallen, so the people still fighting back can’t necessarily depend on fortified towns remaining safe.

Three Diablo 5 Classes Have Already Been Revealed

Blizzard used BlizzCon to confirm the first three playable classes for Diablo 5, including two returning archetypes and one completely new addition.

The Demon Hunter returns with its signature dual-crossbow combat style, while the Monk brings its martial arts and holy-powered attacks back to the series.

Joining them is the Plague Warrior, a new class Blizzard describes as “walking death.”

The Plague Warrior spreads diseases across the battlefield before consuming those effects to strengthen its own abilities. That gives the class an identity built around infecting enemies and then turning those afflictions into additional power.

With Diablo 5 still several years away, more classes and details about the three already announced are likely to emerge throughout the development updates beginning in 2027.

Diablo 4 Will Continue While Diablo 5 Is Developed

The announcement of Diablo 5 doesn’t mean Blizzard is immediately moving on from Diablo 4.

Additional Diablo 4 content is still planned, although Blizzard has indicated that no further expansions are coming.

One major addition is already scheduled for 2027: the Amazon class.

The Amazon is one of Diablo 2’s most recognizable classes, but Blizzard hasn’t yet provided a detailed look at how the returning archetype will play in Diablo 4 or which abilities will make the transition.

Its arrival gives existing players something substantial to anticipate while development continues on the next mainline game.

Diablo 5 Is Still Years Away, but 2027 Is the Real Beginning

BlizzCon 2026 was packed with announcements across Blizzard’s catalog, including World of Warcraft Forever, new Overwatch content, a Warcraft 3 expansion, and an open-world StarCraft shooter targeting 2030 or later.

Diablo 5 nevertheless stands out because Blizzard has chosen to announce it exceptionally early.

A 2029 release means major parts of the game can still change. Starting its regular development updates in 2027 gives Blizzard a long runway to explain those changes and potentially respond to feedback before systems become locked in.

Between the fallen Sanctuary setting, dynamic world elements, traveling caravan, returning classes, and the new Plague Warrior, Blizzard has already outlined a substantially different direction for Diablo 5. The game itself remains years away, but 2027 should provide the first sustained look at whether those ideas can deliver on that ambition.
