New Diablo 4 Release Adds Remastered Diablo 1 Content and Bosses

Diablo 4 is recreating almost the entirety of the original Diablo as part of Season of Hell’s Legacy, Blizzard’s major celebration of the franchise’s 30th anniversary. The upcoming season introduces Waking Nightmares based on previous Diablo games, including a journey through Tristram Cathedral, the Catacombs, the Caves, and Hell before confronting Diablo himself.

Blizzard revealed additional details about the season during its Diablo 4 What’s Next panel at BlizzCon 2026. The anniversary content also brings back the three Prime Evils, Deckard Cain, classic Unique items, and Dark Wanderers inspired by Diablo 2.

Diablo 4 Recreates Almost All of Diablo 1

One of Season of Hell’s Legacy’s biggest additions is Waking Nightmares, a new activity built around memorable locations and encounters from Diablo’s history.

According to Seasons Lead Owen Leach, Blizzard has recreated “almost all” of Diablo 1 using Diablo 4’s engine.

Players will begin at Tristram Cathedral before descending through increasingly dangerous areas familiar from the original game. The route progresses through the Catacombs and Caves before eventually reaching Hell, where Diablo waits at the end.

Rather than simply making the original Diablo available inside Diablo 4, the content has been rebuilt using the modern game’s technology and gameplay systems.

It effectively allows players to revisit the structure and atmosphere of the 1996 game through Diablo 4.

Waking Nightmares Bring Back Classic Diablo Encounters

There will be three types of Waking Nightmare dungeons available during the season.

These activities recreate important moments from previous games rather than focusing exclusively on Diablo 1.

One of the Waking Nightmare variants will feature battles against the franchise’s three Prime Evils:

  • Diablo
  • Baal
  • Mephisto

The seasonal storyline itself is framed around traveling through a living memory of Diablo’s past, giving Blizzard a way to revisit multiple eras of the series within Diablo 4.

That anniversary theme extends beyond locations and bosses, with equipment and characters from previous games also returning.

Classic Diablo Unique Items Are Returning

Season of Hell’s Legacy will add several recognizable pieces of equipment from earlier Diablo games.

Confirmed returning items include Leoric’s Crown, Stone of Jordan, and Messerschmidt’s Reaver.

The season will give players new versions of these classic items to hunt down while progressing through its anniversary content.

Cosmetics and Battle Pass rewards will similarly draw from the franchise’s history, with references to older characters, enemies, and designs appearing throughout the season.

Even the Season of Hell’s Legacy trailer contains what appears to be a tease for Whimsyshire, Diablo 3’s colorful secret area, although Blizzard hasn’t formally confirmed its return.

Dark Wanderers Are Coming to Sanctuary

Players will also encounter Dark Wanderers roaming Sanctuary during Season of Hell’s Legacy.

Their appearance serves as another callback to the series’ history, particularly Diablo 2 and the fate of the original game’s hero.

Combined with the Waking Nightmares, classic equipment, returning bosses, and anniversary cosmetics, the Dark Wanderers reinforce the season’s focus on revisiting Diablo’s past rather than introducing an entirely disconnected seasonal theme.

Deckard Cain is returning as part of the celebration as well, bringing one of the franchise’s most recognizable characters back into the spotlight.

Diablo 4 Still Has More Content Coming

Blizzard’s anniversary plans arrive as Diablo 4 enters a different stage of its lifecycle.

The game isn’t expected to receive additional full expansions after its existing expansion plans conclude, but Blizzard is continuing to support it through seasonal storylines and other content.

The Amazon, originally associated with Diablo 2, is also planned to join Diablo 4 in 2027.

Meanwhile, Blizzard used BlizzCon 2026 to announce Diablo 5, which is targeting a 2029 release.

That leaves several years for Diablo 4 to continue receiving updates while development on its successor progresses.

Diablo 4 Is Now Available on Nintendo Switch 2

BlizzCon also brought news for Nintendo players, with Diablo 4: Age of Hatred Collection launching for Nintendo Switch 2 on September 15.

The collection includes:

  • Diablo 4
  • Vessel of Hatred
  • Lord of Hatred

The Switch 2 release supports HDR and touchscreen functionality.

Players buying the physical edition should be aware that it doesn’t contain the full game on a cartridge. Instead, the retail package includes a download code.

An active Nintendo Switch Online subscription and a connected Battle.net account are also required.

With Diablo 5 still several years away, Season of Hell’s Legacy makes clear that Blizzard isn’t finished with Diablo 4. Rebuilding almost the entire journey through Diablo 1 is the centerpiece, but returning Prime Evils, classic equipment, Dark Wanderers, and other references turn the season into a broader celebration of the series’ 30-year history.
