Death Stranding 2: New Characters, Combat, and Features Revealed

When Hideo Kojima first unveiled Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, speculation immediately began swirling. And now, with its release looming, Kojima Productions and PlayStation have revealed a wealth of new information about the sequel’s world, mechanics, and cast.

Story and Characters Return for Death Stranding 2

Set after the events of the original game, Death Stranding 2 follows Sam Porter Bridges—again played by Norman Reedus—as he journeys beyond the United Cities of America to prevent another global collapse. Returning alongside Sam are Fragile (Léa Seydoux), Higgs (Troy Baker), and Hartman (voiced and modeled after Nicolas Winding Refn). Lou also returns, now older and seemingly more involved in the plot.

Joining the core cast are new characters portrayed by Elle Fanning (Tomorrow), Shioli Kutsuna (Rainey), Luca Martinelli (Neil), and George Miller, who lends his likeness to Tarman, captain of the ship DHV Melligen. Alistair Duncan plays the new UCA President, and Jonathan Roumie performs the puppet-like Dollman.

New Locations, Vehicles, and the Open World in Death Stranding 2

Unlike the first game, Death Stranding 2 features two large open-world maps—one set in Mexico and another in Australia, which will serve as the game’s primary setting. Players can expect greater environmental variety, including dynamic weather conditions like forest fires, avalanches, and sandstorms. A new day-night cycle introduces unique stealth and traversal opportunities, making nighttime a double-edged sword with better cover but worse visibility.

A new ship, the DHV Melligen, will serve as a hub similar to Mother Base in Metal Gear Solid V, with players frequently returning to it between missions. The inclusion of extreme weather and disasters, along with traditional threats like BTs and Timefall, adds more hazards to the already unpredictable landscape.

Combat, Stealth, and the Social Strand System Expanded

Building on criticisms of the first game, Death Stranding 2 introduces more refined stealth and combat systems. New weapons such as machine guns, shotguns, grenade launchers, and decoy holograms give players expanded tactical options. AI improvements and enemy variety enhance both stealth and combat encounters, while traversal remains a core pillar.

The Social Strand System also makes a return, again allowing asynchronous collaboration between players through shared structures, tools, and paths. This feature enables players to shape each other’s experience in subtle but meaningful ways.

Multiple Approaches and Deeper Progression Systems

According to level designer Hiroaki Yoshiike, players can approach objectives through stealth, direct combat, or avoiding threats altogether using alternate paths. This level of flexibility is a key part of the sequel’s design. The Automated Porter Assist System (APAS) introduces a skill tree across combat, stealth, and delivery-focused abilities. In addition, certain stats improve passively as players perform related actions, encouraging organic growth.

For those who struggle with combat or prefer the narrative, Death Stranding 2 will feature an option to skip boss fights. This mechanic, which presents a summary of the encounter before moving forward, was confirmed via Kojima’s radio broadcast and appears after game-over screens.

Visuals, Photo Mode, and PS5 Pro Enhancements

Graphically, the game offers two modes on PlayStation 5: a quality mode focused on fidelity and a performance mode targeting 60fps. The sequel also features an in-depth photo mode, where players can pose multiple characters with high interactivity. Cutscenes now dynamically adjust lighting based on the time of day, adding further realism to cinematic scenes.

Kojima confirmed the title will receive enhancements on the PlayStation 5 Pro. While specific features haven’t been detailed, expectations include improved resolution, performance, and possibly ray tracing.

Estimated Length, DLC, and What Comes Next

Based on current playthrough estimates, Death Stranding 2 will clock in at around 75 hours, depending on optional content. Despite its scale, Kojima has stated there are no plans for DLC post-launch. He emphasized a desire to create a complete experience from day one.

Interestingly, while no sequel is in development, Kojima has discussed ideas involving Death Stranding 2‘s “Plate Gate” system, which could allow future titles in the franchise to explore other global regions.
