Deadlock May 2026 Patch Notes: Urn Rework, Victor Nerfed, and Every Hero Change Explained

How the Deadlock May 2026 Patch Notes Change Every Role from Support to Carry: Rem Tagalong Rework, Grit Item Build Path, Yamato Buffs, and the Urn Favored Resist Aura Explained

Valve dropped the May 22, 2026 Deadlock update late on a Thursday, and the community is still processing it. Victor’s wall-breaking strategy is officially dead. The Urn works completely differently now. Kelvin got nerfed hard. Rem went from a fringe pick to possibly the strongest support in the game. And the Mid Boss now spawns at the very start of the match.

Deadlock: May 22, 2026 Core Balance Tracker

Category Target Asset Status Key Patch Details Tactical Impact
Objective The Urn Overhaul Melee to grab. Favored team gains a massive 60m aura of 50% Bullet/Spirit Resistance. The premier map objective. Turns the winning team into near-unkillable raid bosses during fights.
Objective Mid Boss Rework Spawns instantly at the start of the match (Minute 0). Enables hyper-aggressive, Minute-1 rush comps if early waves are cleared instantly.
System Wall Jumping Nerf In-combat wall jumps trigger a 25% Stamina Regen penalty for 5s. Heavily punishes high-mobility, vertical skirmishers who spam bounces.
System Structures Rework Shrines invulnerable until a base Guardian pair dies. Guardians squishier early. Stops early backdoor strategies; accelerates early laning phases.
Item Shop Grit (New T2) NEW Active: 200 Barrier (4s). Innate: +1 Out-of-Combat Regen. 6s CD. Forms a dominant survivability build path when upgraded into Indomitable.
Hero Rem Buff Tagalong flies 50% faster, grants up to 80% DR, and casts through veils. Instantly moves from a niche, fringe pick to an absolute tier-S premier support.
Hero Yamato Buff Reduced Power Slash cast frames; Flying Slash range extended to 30m. Significantly smooths out input execution variables for spirit-based burst builds.
Hero Victor Nerf Aura of Suffering damage to objectives slashed by 50%. Completely eliminates the cheese “Wall-Breaker” structure-melting build meta.
Hero Kelvin Nerf Scaling on Frost Grenade / Beam cut. Dome no longer stops Urn deposits. Heavily neutralizes his objective stall utility and raw map-control dominance.

This is not a small balance pass. If you load into a game right now without reading this, you will lose games you should have won because of changes you never saw coming.

Here is a breakdown of every change that will actually affect how you play, who you pick, and what you buy.

The Urn Got Completely Rebuilt From the Ground Up

The biggest change in this patch is not a hero nerf. It is the Urn, and Valve is upfront that this is an experiment they want feedback on.

Here is how it works now. Instead of standing still and channeling to pick it up, you light or heavy melee the Urn to grab it. The Urn always drops on the bridge in the middle of the map. Once someone delivers it, it enters a deposit phase. The favored team deposits in 3 seconds, neutral takes 5, and unfavored takes 10.

The defending team can contest by heavy meleing the Urn during that window, which adds 1.25 seconds to their timer and switches sides.

The favored team also gets 50% bullet and spirit resistance in a 60-meter radius around the Urn while it is being carried, dropped, or deposited. That number is not a typo. Half of all bullet and spirit damage just does not exist for the team that is winning the Urn. Some players are already testing ways to drop the Urn near the Mid Boss fight to abuse that resistance window.

Other confirmed Urn changes:

  • Carrier is no longer silenced, but still disarmed and movement-silenced

  • The 50% bullet and spirit resist the carrier used to get personally is gone

  • After 35 seconds of total hold time the carrier takes 5% max HP per second (down from 45 seconds and 15% max HP)

  • If fumbled and no one picks it up within 13 seconds, it can no longer be grabbed and runs back to spawn on its own

  • The carrier and the deposit area are both visible on the minimap

  • Souls pay out instantly once the deposit completes

  • Last person to contest gets 3 golden idol buffs, falling back to the original carrier

The favored team resistance aura is the part most players are worried about. If your team is already ahead on Urns, you walk in with massive damage reduction for the entire fight. The counterplay is not obvious yet.

Victor Lost His Best Strat. Wall Breaker Is Gone.

If you have watched any ranked Deadlock in the past few months, you have seen the Aura of Suffering wall-breaking Victor build. It was the go-to ELO tool for players who knew about it.

It is dead now.

Aura of Suffering now does only 50% of its damage to objectives. The ability still works in team fights, but the wall-breaking potential that made it a near-instant structure clear is gone. Victor’s bullet damage was also reduced in this patch. Jump Start Tier 3 spirit scaling was increased to compensate, so Victor is being pushed toward a full spirit build rather than a gun-plus-aura hybrid.

If you built around that strat, find a new plan.

Mid Boss Now Spawns at the Start of the Match

This one is wild. The Mid Boss now spawns at the beginning of the game.

In the first few minutes of a match, if one team clears a wave fast, grabs Monster Rounds, and rotates immediately, they can attempt the Mid Boss before anyone has gear. Streamers are already clipping teams at Minute 1 rushing it and getting kills as the other team scrambles over.

Combined with the 50% resistance Urn aura, early map control is now far more punishing than it was before.

Global Nerfs Hit Every Hero at Once

Valve pulled the numbers down across the board before touching any individual hero:

  • Base HP reduced by 10 for all heroes

  • HP per Boon reduced by 3

  • Guardian scaling resistance reworked from +75% to -50% over 12 minutes, to +50% to -50% (guardians take more damage early now)

  • Stamina regen cut 25% for 5 seconds after a wall jump (does not apply out of combat or when mantling right after)

  • Bullet velocity now stacks additively instead of diminishingly

  • Total damage reduction debuffs now stack diminishingly instead of additively

  • Move speed diminish point increased from 11 to 12

  • Shrines are now invulnerable until at least one pair of base guardians is destroyed

  • Medium neutral spawn reduced from 6 to 5; Breakable spawn time up from 2 to 3

  • A new 6,400 soul investment bonus was added to the progression curve

The stamina change is particularly important for aggressive wall-jump fighters. If you play heroes that chain wall jumps in combat, expect to feel the regen gap at the worst possible moment.

New Item: Grit Is Quietly a Big Deal

A new Tier 2 Vitality item called Grit was added to the item shop.

  • Active: 200 barrier for 4 seconds

  • Innate: +1 out-of-combat regen

  • Cooldown: 6 seconds

  • Upgrades into: Weapon Shielding, Spirit Shielding, Reactive Barrier, and Guardian Ward

The upgrade path into Reactive Barrier and then into Indomitable is already being flagged as a potential problem build chain. Indomitable also got buffed this patch, gaining +2 out-of-combat regen and 10% bullet and spirit resistance. Running Grit into Reactive Barrier into Indomitable on a survivability-focused hero will likely be a popular routing choice this patch.

Who Won This Patch

Rem is the biggest winner, and it is not close. Tagalong now flies to allies 50% faster. It provides 30% damage reduction in the base ability, scaling up to 80% at Tier 3. It can now be cast through veils. Friendly auras work while Rem is attached. Eject no longer briefly locks your movement inputs. Burst heal applies to secondary jump targets. Heal duration is shown on the HUD. Rem is no longer a niche pick.

Yamato also came out well. Power Slash cast time was reduced and spirit scaling went up. Flying Slash range increased from 25m to 30m. Tier 3 now grants +2 charges. Shadow Transformation grants more weapon damage. Crimson Slash was fixed so it can actually hit targets when aimed at steep angles. Her Tier 1 Power Slash spirit scaling, when maxed, is reportedly 2.6, which combined with Spirit Snatch and Mystic Shot buffs in the same patch makes her worth a serious look.

Lash received targeted changes. Bullet damage per Boon was reduced slightly (3.4 to 3.1), but Ground Strike damage per meter scaling was increased. Grapple Tier 3 now grants +1 charge, and Tier 2 refreshes duration instead of stacking damage. Lash is still strong, just not purely gun-focused anymore.

Grey Talon got a meaningful Rain of Arrows rework. Cooldown reduced by 8 seconds, cast delay reduced, air mobility improved, and stamina distance shifted from -9% to +25%. Tier 1 now grants +3 weapon damage and +30% slow. Talon players calling this one of the better patches for the hero in a while.

Graves received a full suite of dead heads fixes along with a buff to Grasping Hand, which now spawns a ghoul at base level. Dead heads can now dash through veils and to targets at maximum attack range. The trade-off is a 10% reduction to bullet damage and growth, so Graves is clearly being pushed toward spirit builds.

Who Lost This Patch

Kelvin took direct nerfs. Frost Grenade damage spirit scaling was reduced, and Arctic Beam DPS spirit scaling was reduced. On top of that, Kelvin’s Dome does not stop Urn deposit progress, which players discovered post-patch. That is a significant interaction loss.

Apollo was hit hard. His hitbox was improved (meaning he is now easier to hit). Base regen was reduced. Repose, his ability that used to auto-dash to a target, now requires you to manually choose a target using a sub-ability for a brief window. It no longer triggers on damage auras or from objective damage. If you were relying on Repose to proc off Abrams 1 or Victor 3, that is gone.

Pocket got nerved down. Cloak Tier 2 weapon damage duration was reduced, and Affliction cooldown was increased.

Mina received a mixed bag. Love Bites no longer applies its flat on-hit damage bonus to abilities. Specifically, the interaction that was doing 20% of Love Bites value on her ultimate, Nox Nostra, now does 0%. Her Tier 3 cooldown on Love Bites improved and she gains an innate -8% debuff resist, but her ultimate is noticeably weaker.

Doorman had Call Bell’s accuracy debuff cut from 100% to -40% and removed the slow falloff (now flat 4 seconds). Doorway’s closed sub-ability now starts on an 8-second cooldown and is no longer unsilenceable. If Doorman was your main, it is a rough week.

Map Changes: Two Jump Pads Are Gone

The vents on both sides of the blue guardian lane were removed. These were the fastest safe rotation routes to the side lane. Their removal changes how you rotate mid-game. If you relied on those vents to dodge fights or quickly rotate after a push, that option is gone. You will need to rethink your pathing habits, especially on the blue side.

What to Test First When You Queue

If you play support, load into Rem immediately. The Tagalong rework makes him a completely different hero to play.

If you play Yamato, this is your patch. Go into a practice lobby and feel the new Power Slash timing and the extended Flying Slash range before ranked.

If you ran wall-breaker Victor, that chapter is over. Look at full spirit Victor or try a different structure-clear option.

If you play around the Urn, learn the new rules before your team does it wrong in a ranked match. The favored resistance aura and the timing windows are not obvious at first.

The Mid Boss at Minute 1 is still being figured out by the community. Early tests show it is possible but requires near-perfect wave clear and fast rotation. This will likely be a niche strategy at high level before becoming standard in a few weeks.

The next patch window has not been confirmed. Given Valve’s pace this year, expect a follow-up balance pass within two to three weeks if the Urn experiment creates problems. Watch the official Deadlock forums changelog and SteamDB for the fastest official updates.
