Crimson Desert DLC Coming in 2026, Switch 2 Targets 2027

Crimson Desert is only a few months old, but Pearl Abyss is already preparing its next major phase. The developer plans to release the game’s first DLC before the end of 2026, while development on a Nintendo Switch 2 version has progressed far enough for the port to reach a playable state. That version is currently targeting the first half of 2027.

The update comes from Pearl Abyss’ latest financial disclosures, where the company also reiterated its intention to turn Crimson Desert into a long-term franchise rather than treating the March release as a one-off project. More details on the DLC, including its structure, pricing and exact release timing, are expected during the third quarter.

Crimson Desert’s First DLC Is Planned for 2026

Pearl Abyss says development of the first Crimson Desert DLC is already underway and that the current goal is to release it before the end of 2026.

That gives the expansion a surprisingly short turnaround after the base game launched on March 19.

Crimson Desert Current Status
Original release March 19, 2026
First DLC Targeting 2026
DLC reveal/details Q3 2026
DLC pricing Not yet announced
Switch 2 version In development
Switch 2 status Playable baseline reached
Switch 2 target First half of 2027
Lifetime sales More than 6 million

Pearl Abyss has not yet explained exactly what the DLC contains.

The company says it is still refining the content direction and overall quality, with more information expected before the end of September.

The DLC Has Not Yet Been Confirmed as Paid

This is one detail that has been overstated in some reports.

Pearl Abyss has not officially confirmed a price for the upcoming expansion.

Its earnings communication specifically says that details regarding the DLC’s structure, pricing and launch schedule will be announced in Q3.

That means it could ultimately be a traditional paid expansion, but that should not yet be presented as confirmed.

The studio has already released numerous free updates since launch, making the distinction particularly important.

Pearl Abyss Is Calling It the First DLC

The wording around the project also suggests that Pearl Abyss expects Crimson Desert to receive more content after this year’s release.

However, the company has not yet committed to a specific number of DLC packs or a fixed release cadence.

Its current priority is completing the first DLC and evaluating future plans based on player feedback, sales performance, available development resources and the company’s wider schedule.

So while additional expansions look likely, a full multi-year DLC roadmap has not been announced.

Crimson Desert Has Already Sold More Than Six Million Copies

Pearl Abyss has plenty of reason to keep investing in the game.

Its latest investor materials state that Crimson Desert has surpassed six million copies sold worldwide.

The game had already crossed five million copies within its first month on sale. Pearl Abyss officially announced that milestone in April, following a launch that quickly became the biggest commercial success in the company’s history.

During Q2 alone, approximately 2.11 million copies were sold, with around 1.72 million of those being digital purchases.

That continued performance helps explain why Pearl Abyss is already talking about Crimson Desert as something much larger than a single release.

Pearl Abyss Wants Crimson Desert to Become a Long-Term IP

The company has made its ambitions increasingly clear.

Pearl Abyss does not view Crimson Desert as a standalone project. It sees the world, characters and technology behind the game as the foundation for a broader franchise.

That could eventually include more DLC, future games and potentially multiplayer-related projects.

None of those possibilities should be confused with announced products, however.

Pearl Abyss has acknowledged that sequels and multiplayer expansion are possibilities, but its immediate development priority remains post-launch support and the first DLC.

The Nintendo Switch 2 Version Is Already Playable

The other major piece of news concerns Nintendo.

Pearl Abyss has now confirmed that development of a Nintendo Switch 2 version of Crimson Desert has progressed to what the company describes as a playable baseline.

That is a meaningful milestone considering how technically demanding Crimson Desert can be.

The game was built around large open environments, detailed rendering, fast combat and numerous physics-driven interactions — all areas where adapting the experience to mobile-class hardware presents obvious challenges.

Pearl Abyss is therefore spending additional time optimizing the game before committing to a final release date.

Switch 2 Is Targeting the First Half of 2027

The current plan is to release the Nintendo version during the first half of 2027.

That would mean a launch sometime between January and June next year.

But this is still a target.

Pearl Abyss has explicitly stopped short of giving the Switch 2 version a firm launch date, noting that further optimization and testing are required.

That distinction matters because adapting one of 2026’s most visually ambitious open-world games to Switch 2 is unlikely to be straightforward.

Pearl Abyss Says It Is More Than a Simple Port

The developer has also suggested that bringing Crimson Desert to Nintendo’s hardware requires more than simply lowering a few graphics settings.

Pearl Abyss CEO Heo Jin-young previously described the project as more than a straightforward port, stressing that the team wants to preserve the scale, action and visual identity of the original while adapting it to different hardware.

The wider goal is to make Crimson Desert available on as many platforms as practical.

The game is currently available across PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, Epic Games Store and Mac.

A successful Switch 2 version would open the game to another substantial audience.

Six Million Sales Make Platform Expansion an Obvious Move

From a business perspective, the strategy makes sense.

Crimson Desert has already proven that there is significant demand for the IP.

Rather than moving the entire development team directly onto another project, Pearl Abyss can extend the commercial life of the existing game through three routes:

new content

continued updates

and

additional platforms

The first major DLC addresses existing players, while the Switch 2 release gives Pearl Abyss an opportunity to sell the base game to an entirely new audience.

Post-Launch Support Has Already Been Aggressive

Pearl Abyss has not waited for the DLC to keep changing the game.

Since launch, Crimson Desert has received a steady stream of patches and content updates covering combat, exploration, systems and quality-of-life improvements.

The studio previously published a post-launch roadmap outlining further gameplay and story improvements while confirming that DLC development was underway.

That pace suggests the company is treating the game more like an evolving platform than a traditional single-player release that receives a handful of patches and is then left alone.

It remains a primarily single-player game, but its post-launch strategy increasingly resembles the long-tail support seen around major modern RPGs.

The DLC Reveal Should Come Before the End of September

The next major milestone is therefore Q3.

Pearl Abyss says it plans to reveal more about the DLC’s:

  • content structure
  • release schedule
  • pricing
  • overall direction

during the quarter.

Given that the DLC itself is still targeting 2026, there will not be a particularly long gap between its full reveal and release if the current schedule holds.

That could make the next several weeks especially important for players who have already finished the main adventure in Pywel.

Crimson Desert Is Becoming Much Bigger Than Its March Launch

The bigger story is what has happened to Crimson Desert since release.

What began as Pearl Abyss’ huge single-player gamble has sold more than six million copies, generated enough momentum for immediate DLC investment and is now being prepared for another major platform.

There are still several details Pearl Abyss needs to clarify.

We do not yet know what the first DLC contains, how large it will be, whether it will be free or paid, or exactly when it will arrive. The Switch 2 version also remains a target rather than a locked release.

But the direction is clear.

Pearl Abyss has no intention of leaving Pywel behind after one game. Crimson Desert’s first DLC is targeting the end of 2026, the Switch 2 version is aiming for the first half of 2027, and six million sales have given the studio every reason to keep expanding the franchise.
