Patch 1.2.3 introduces the long-requested Auto Explorer feature to Civilization VII. Unlike previous entries, scouts in Civ 7 function differently, which delayed this addition. Now, all scout units, their unique variants, tier 2 and 3 naval units from the Exploration Age (like the Karak and Galleon), and all Modern Age naval units (excluding submarines) have access to auto-exploration. Units like the ironclad, ship of the line, cruiser, dreadnought, destroyer, and battleship now benefit from this streamlined scouting feature.
The tier 1 COG unit remains excluded. Feedback gathered via the official Discord played a significant role in shaping the design of this first version. Firaxis will continue to monitor how players interact with it and refine it further in future updates.
Advisor Warning Overhaul Begins
Advisor warnings have also received a first pass of improvements. These popups from scientific, military, economic, or cultural advisers had long been flagged as poorly timed or overly repetitive. Firaxis has now begun a cleanup process to address oddities—such as receiving alerts about nuclear weapons availability after already deploying them.

Future patches will further refine advisor behavior, but the current update already introduces smoother timing and more logical advice triggers.
Age Transition Rework and Continuity Mode
One of the most impactful changes in 1.2.3 is the introduction of a new Continuity setting for age transitions. Unlike the traditional “Regroup” option, continuity allows units to upgrade in place rather than return to base. Naval and siege units, as well as scouts, settlers, migrants, and merchants, now carry over more smoothly between ages. This creates a less disruptive transition, particularly when units are positioned deep in foreign territory.
Diplomacy has been rebalanced as well. Past updates caused abrupt shifts in relationships between ages, such as enemies suddenly becoming neutral. Now, relationships gradually pull back toward neutral over time, especially when players stop interacting. The further from zero the status, the stronger the pull, allowing for a more organic evolution of friendships and rivalries.
A “safe zone” has been added at the end of each age, providing a guaranteed 10-turn minimum window—extendable up to 20 turns—before age progression begins. This lets players wrap up critical actions without being caught off guard.
Trưng Trắc’s Sister Trưng Nhị Arrives
Patch 1.2.3 also debuts a new unique commander: Trưng Nhị, representing the famed sisterhood of Trưng Trắc. This character includes a custom model, exclusive promotions, and unique in-game mechanics. Available to all players, she strengthens the identity and thematic depth of the Trưng faction.
For those who own the Founders Edition, the Right to Rule Collection rollout begins alongside this patch. More updates are on the way, with deeper changes to replayability, legacy paths, and empire identity under development. Smaller improvements in 1.2.3 also include:
-
Catapults and merchants are now available at the start of the Exploration Age.
-
Buildings retain base yield and maintenance during age transitions (though adjacencies and effects still reset).
-
Independent powers now spawn immediately after transitions.
-
Additional tweaks to UI, AI, game balance, and quality of life round out the patch.
