Chained Echoes: Five Things to Know Before the Xbox Release

Chained Echoes lands on Xbox this August 7, making this the perfect time to brush up on tips before diving in. This pixel-style JRPG is often praised as one of the best indie throwbacks in years, combining SNES-era combat with modern mechanics. However, its systems aren’t always intuitive. Here are five must-know strategies that can make a huge difference early on.

Prioritize Active Skills When Using Grimoire Shards

Grimoire Shards let players choose between active skills, passive bonuses, or raw stat increases. The most efficient path early on is to focus on active battle skills. These earn SP only while equipped—something that can’t happen if they’re not unlocked. The sooner they’re active, the faster they start improving.

Building a variety of active skills across characters also helps control the Overdrive gauge more efficiently. Once there’s a good spread of actives, move on to key passives. Leave stat upgrades for last, and avoid the early status-based skills—they offer little value in the long run.

Use the Bonus Board for Smarter Grinding

The bonus board is the fastest way to power up in Chained Echoes. Grinding random monsters for SP is far less efficient than completing board challenges. Each completed tile provides far more SP and gold, plus it offers exclusive rewards like Sacred Water and Grimoire Shards.

Sacred Water is the only way to activate class statues, making the bonus board essential for long-term growth. Just don’t forget to claim rewards manually by pressing the confirmation button—rewards won’t auto-collect.

A solid tactic: complete story beats, then return to earlier areas to steamroll enemies and knock out challenges with ease.

Combine Rob and Sienna Strategically for Boss Fights

Sienna should stay in the main party at all times—her AOE damage, strong single-target attacks, and steal ability are all incredibly useful. Rob, on the other hand, shines best during boss encounters. Their synergy becomes a major asset when used correctly.

Both characters can apply damage-over-time effects like poison and bleed, which should always be deployed early in boss fights. Later, Rob’s paralysis followed by Sienna’s Ninjutsu results in triple damage. Keeping them on separate formations allows both to be used in tandem without clashing—an ideal setup for big fights.

Master the Overdrive System Early

The Overdrive gauge makes or breaks most boss encounters. Keeping it in the green zone means reduced damage taken and lower TP costs. Letting it slip into red nearly guarantees failure.

Defending or using cooldown abilities might feel like wasting a turn, but they’re crucial for keeping things under control. Overdrive items can also help in a pinch. Don’t forget to swap in reserve characters whose skills are highlighted in yellow—those abilities are the fastest way to drop the gauge safely.

Optimize Menus: Crystals, Weapons, and Deals

Behind its clean menu design, Chained Echoes hides a lot of optimization potential. Always upgrade weapons when possible—even a couple of extra attack points make a noticeable difference.

Take advantage of crystals: refine and socket them into equipment at the blacksmith to improve resistances or output. Deals also offer rare gear and income boosts. They’re a great way to access strong equipment earlier than usual.

Finally, use all available SP to level up skills. Doing so increases their effectiveness while lowering TP costs—perfect for tougher encounters and resource management.
