Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is facing criticism after players discovered several pieces of in-game artwork they believe may have been created using generative AI. The images have surfaced during the game’s Early Access multiplayer beta, prompting another debate about Activision’s use of AI-generated content.
Generative AI being involved in Modern Warfare 4’s development isn’t entirely unexpected. Activision has already disclosed that AI tools were used to help create some in-game assets. However, the company hasn’t provided a detailed explanation of exactly which assets use the technology or how extensively it appears throughout the game.
Modern Warfare 4 Players Spot Suspected AI Artwork
With players now exploring Modern Warfare 4’s multiplayer maps during the beta, several unusual pieces of environmental artwork have started attracting attention online.
On X, DANNYonPC highlighted illustrated characters found within the game that players believe contain inconsistent details and strange geometry commonly associated with generative AI imagery.
Additional examples shared across X and Reddit reportedly include artwork appearing on posters and gacha machines scattered around the multiplayer environments.
None of these individual images have been confirmed by Activision or Infinity Ward as AI-generated. As a result, claims surrounding specific assets remain speculation based primarily on their appearance.
Still, Activision’s existing disclosure that generative AI was used during development has led players to examine the game’s artwork much more closely than they otherwise might.
Players Are Divided Over Modern Warfare 4’s AI Use
Reaction from the Call of Duty community has been mixed.
Critics argue that a franchise as commercially successful as Call of Duty should employ artists to create environmental artwork, even when those assets are relatively minor background details.
Multiplayer maps contain advertisements, posters, signs, illustrations, and other decorative elements that contribute to the identity of each location. For players opposed to generative AI, using the technology for these details can make environments feel less carefully crafted.
There are also concerns that Modern Warfare 4 could continue a trend players have criticized in recent Call of Duty games, where suspected or confirmed generative AI content becomes increasingly visible in cosmetic and visual assets.
Other players are considerably less concerned. Some question whether the images circulating online were actually generated using AI in the first place, while others argue that background posters and advertisements have little meaningful impact on multiplayer gameplay.
Activision Has Already Disclosed Generative AI Use
The controversy differs from situations where players are simply speculating about whether a developer has adopted generative technology.
Modern Warfare 4’s Steam disclosure already confirms that generative AI tools were used to assist with the creation of some game assets.
What remains unclear is the extent of that usage.
Activision hasn’t provided a complete list identifying which assets were AI-assisted, nor has Infinity Ward explained precisely how the technology fits into its production pipeline. That leaves players attempting to determine which artwork may have involved AI by looking for visual inconsistencies themselves.
The situation also follows previous criticism surrounding suspected or acknowledged AI-generated content in recent Call of Duty releases, including cosmetic artwork such as calling cards.
MW4 Recently Faced Another Art Controversy
The beta discoveries come shortly after Modern Warfare 4 attracted attention for a separate promotional image.
Ahead of Gamescom, an official Call of Duty social media account briefly published artwork that fans criticized for several unusual details. Players pointed to an oddly rendered weapon and a character pose that appeared similar to Battlefield 3’s recognizable box art.
The image was subsequently removed.
A Call of Duty social media representative explained that the artwork was a temporary render from an internal marketing guide that had accidentally been published.
That incident concerned promotional material rather than something players would encounter directly inside the game. The latest controversy has attracted additional attention because the suspected AI artwork appears within Modern Warfare 4’s multiplayer environments themselves.
MW4’s Detailed Environments Put More Attention on Its Artwork
The discussion is particularly notable given Infinity Ward’s emphasis on authenticity while promoting Modern Warfare 4.
The developer has discussed the research behind the game’s South Korean settings and the importance of environmental detail when constructing its locations. That makes posters, advertisements, signs, and other seemingly minor assets more relevant than they might initially appear.
For now, there is no confirmation that the specific images highlighted by players were generated using AI. What is confirmed is that generative AI was involved with some portion of Modern Warfare 4’s assets.
With the game still in beta, Infinity Ward also has time to alter or replace environmental artwork before release. However, Activision’s confirmed use of generative AI means players will likely continue closely inspecting Modern Warfare 4 for further examples as the beta progresses.
