How to Heal in The Blood of Dawnwalker

Healing in The Blood of Dawnwalker depends on whether Coen is human during the day or a vampire at night. Human Coen primarily relies on food and crafted healing items, while his vampire form restores health by drinking blood with Voracious Bite or using Blood Vials.

Coen also doesn’t have universal passive health regeneration. Simply leaving combat won’t automatically refill his health unless a specific skill or effect provides regeneration. Learning which healing methods work in each form is therefore essential, particularly before difficult fights.

How Healing Works During the Day and Night

The Blood of Dawnwalker effectively has two different healing systems.

During the day, Coen can use conventional consumables. Food provides gradual recovery, while potions, ointments, salves, and similar crafted items offer more practical healing when you’re in danger.

At night, Coen’s transformation changes the system. His vampire form instead relies primarily on blood drinking and Vampirism abilities.

It’s also important to distinguish healing-over-time effects from natural regeneration. If an apple continues restoring Coen’s health after a fight, for example, that’s the food’s effect—not a hidden out-of-combat regeneration mechanic.

Certain skills can provide passive recovery, but Coen won’t automatically regenerate health by default just because he’s safe.

How to Heal During the Day

There are two primary ways to recover Human Health during daylight hours:

  • Food
  • Crafted healing items

Food is easy to obtain and useful during exploration, while dedicated healing consumables are generally better when you need health quickly.

Use Food Between Fights

Food is one of the simplest ways to restore Coen’s health.

Basic items such as apples and berries provide health recovery over time. When you’re outside combat and can safely wait for the effect, even an ordinary piece of food can restore a substantial portion of your health bar.

The downside is speed.

Food’s gradual healing makes it poorly suited to situations where an enemy is actively attacking you. It’s better to use inexpensive food while exploring and save your more valuable dedicated healing supplies for dangerous encounters.

Use Potions, Ointments, and Salves in Combat

Crafted healing items provide a more dependable option when Coen needs stronger recovery.

Depending on the item, they can provide an immediate burst of health or restore health gradually over a shorter period.

However, you won’t necessarily know how to craft them at the beginning of the game.

First, you need to find and read the appropriate recipe. Recipes can appear as random loot or be sold by certain merchants. Once you’ve learned one and collected the necessary ingredients, you can create the item through the Crafting menu.

After crafting your healing supplies, open the Consumables tab and assign the items you want to use to your Quick Slots.

This preparation is especially important on higher difficulties, where food and potions can’t be used during combat unless they’ve already been assigned to a Quick Slot.

How to Heal as a Vampire at Night

Once night falls, Coen’s healing options change significantly.

His human-focused food and healing items aren’t available in the same way. Instead, vampire Coen restores health primarily by drinking blood.

Your most important ability for this is Voracious Bite, which becomes available after completing the prologue.

How Voracious Bite Works

Voracious Bite allows Coen to drain blood from eligible animals and humans, restoring his Vampiric Health in the process.

The ability behaves differently depending on whether you’re currently fighting.

Voracious Bite During Combat

In combat, Voracious Bite functions as an Active Ability.

Using it requires:

  • 1 Activation Charge
  • 30-second cooldown

You’ll therefore need to choose your opportunity carefully rather than relying on it continuously during a fight.

Voracious Bite Outside Combat

Outside combat, blood drinking functions as an innate ability and can be used repeatedly on eligible targets without the same Activation Charge restriction.

This makes wildlife and isolated human targets potential sources of recovery while exploring at night.

Be careful about where you feed, however.

Trying to drain a human while their allies are nearby can lead to an immediate interruption. Aggressive animals such as wolves and boars can cause similar problems if other members of their group are close enough to attack.

Whenever possible, isolate your target before feeding.

How to Improve Voracious Bite Healing

Vampirism perks can make blood drinking considerably more effective.

Nourishing Blood, for example, increases the amount of health Coen restores when drinking blood.

This can reduce the number of targets or resources required to refill his Vampiric Health and is particularly useful if you regularly rely on Voracious Bite for nighttime recovery.

How Blood Vials Work

Blood Vials provide a portable alternative when there isn’t a convenient target nearby.

The two standard types are:

Blood Vial Source Healing
Vial of Animal Blood Large animals such as deer, wolves, and boars 50% of a Vampiric Health Segment
Vial of Human Blood Human enemies 100% of a Vampiric Health Segment

These are especially valuable during difficult encounters where feeding directly from an enemy isn’t practical.

Because Blood Vials can also contribute to Corruption progression, you’ll need to balance their different uses. Keeping some in reserve for emergency healing is generally safer than consuming your entire supply whenever you want more Corruption.

What Are Vials of Vrakhir Blood?

Coen can also obtain special Vials of Vrakhir Blood through questlines involving Brencis and his boyars.

These aren’t ordinary healing resources. Vrakhir Blood is tied to Corruption progression and unlocking exclusive abilities in the Vampirism tree.

As a result, it should be treated differently from the Animal and Human Blood Vials you routinely collect from enemies and wildlife.

Blood Infusions

After finding the appropriate crafting recipe, Blood Vials can also be converted into Blood Infusions.

These retain the healing value associated with their corresponding blood while providing additional benefits, such as increased maximum health.

Blood Infusions can therefore be more valuable than simply consuming an ordinary vial, particularly when preparing for a difficult nighttime encounter.

Blood Leeches

Another rarer vampire healing option comes from Blood Leeches obtained through Ambrus’s Leech Draining.

These can restore health while Coen is in vampire form, providing another alternative to Voracious Bite and Blood Vials.

Their availability is limited, however, and they can’t be farmed indefinitely. That makes them better suited to situations where you specifically need the extra healing rather than routine exploration.

Which Skills Give Passive Healing?

Coen doesn’t have universal passive health regeneration, but certain skills can create their own regeneration or recovery effects.

These abilities are important because they reduce your dependence on consumables and blood without changing the underlying rule that Coen doesn’t simply regenerate health by default.

Closing Wounds

Closing Wounds slowly regenerates Vampiric Health within Coen’s current Health Segment.

It won’t replace blood when you need substantial healing across multiple segments, but it can reduce the amount of blood required to recover from smaller amounts of damage.

Scarlet Shield

Scarlet Shield can trigger Health Regeneration after a Perfect Block.

This makes it particularly useful for defensive vampire builds that already focus on precise blocking.

Blood Theft

Blood Theft lets attacks restore recently lost Vampiric Health.

Aggressive players can therefore recover some recent damage simply by staying on the offensive rather than disengaging to heal.

Font of Life

Font of Life is a Witchcraft option that provides health regeneration while Coen is outside combat.

It’s also a good example of the distinction between passive skills and default regeneration. Coen doesn’t naturally recover simply because combat has ended; Font of Life specifically grants that ability.

Set Up Quick Slots for Both Forms

One easy mistake is preparing healing items for one form and forgetting about the other.

Coen has separate Quick Slot setups for his day and night gameplay, so organizing one doesn’t automatically mean the other is ready.

Before heading into a dangerous area, check both.

For daytime encounters, assign your preferred food or crafted healing consumables. For nighttime combat, make sure your blood-based healing resources are accessible.

This becomes especially useful when you’re approaching a transition between day and night. Preparing both loadouts beforehand means you won’t have to reorganize your inventory when Coen is already injured or entering a difficult encounter.

Best Way to Keep Coen Healed

The simplest strategy is to treat human and vampire healing as separate systems.

During the day, use inexpensive food between encounters and save stronger crafted healing items for combat. Unlock useful recipes as you explore and keep your preferred emergency consumables assigned to Quick Slots.

At night, use Voracious Bite whenever safe blood sources are available and keep Blood Vials for situations where feeding isn’t practical. Vampirism skills such as Nourishing Blood, Closing Wounds, Blood Theft, and Scarlet Shield can make this system increasingly sustainable as your build develops.

Most importantly, don’t assume Coen will recover simply by leaving combat. Unless an active food effect, equipment bonus, consumable, or specific skill is healing him, lost health stays lost. Preparing the correct recovery options for both sides of the day-night cycle is the most reliable way to keep Coen alive.
