The Blood of Dawnwalker: How to Get the Legendary Coat of Darkened Scales Armor

The Coat of Darkened Scales is a legendary armor piece in The Blood of Dawnwalker found by digging up the Split Rock treasure west of Svartrau City in the Rockfalls region. You don’t actually need to obtain the Split Rock treasure map first, meaning you can head directly to the buried chest and claim the armor as soon as you’re ready to make the journey.

The armor is particularly useful for Vampirism-focused builds. It increases Coen’s maximum Vampiric Health and Stamina while improving passive Activation Charge restoration, giving you more resources for his supernatural abilities.

Where to Find the Coat of Darkened Scales

To find the Coat of Darkened Scales, leave Svartrau City and travel west into the Rockfalls region.

The treasure is located on a small rocky plateau in the mountains.

Getting there can take some time if you haven’t unlocked nearby Shrines, so having one of Coen’s Haste abilities makes the journey considerably faster. Haste isn’t required to reach the location, however.

Once you arrive at the plateau, look for its most distinctive landmark: two large boulders leaning against each other.

These rocks are the landmark referenced by the Split Rock treasure map.

How to Dig Up the Split Rock Treasure

Walk underneath the two leaning boulders and search the small area directly below them.

Once you’re in the correct spot, Coen can interact with the ground to dig up the buried treasure.

Digging takes one hour of in-game time, so account for that if you’re managing the story’s time limit or trying to complete other activities during the same day.

After the digging animation finishes, you’ll receive the legendary Coat of Darkened Scales armor.

The basic process is:

  1. Travel west from Svartrau City.
  2. Enter the Rockfalls region.
  3. Head toward the mountainous treasure location.
  4. Find the small rocky plateau.
  5. Look for two large boulders leaning together.
  6. Search underneath the rocks.
  7. Spend one hour digging up the treasure.
  8. Collect the Coat of Darkened Scales.

Do You Need the Split Rock Treasure Map?

No, you don’t need the Split Rock treasure map to obtain the Coat of Darkened Scales.

The map provides the clue that leads players toward the buried treasure, but the chest can still be dug up if you already know its location.

Players following the treasure hunt normally can retrieve the Split Rock map from the southwestern portion of the world first.

However, if your only objective is getting the legendary armor for a Vampirism build, traveling directly to the two leaning boulders in Rockfalls saves time.

Coat of Darkened Scales Stats

The Coat of Darkened Scales provides four bonuses:

Stat Bonus
Passive Activation Charge Restoration +17.3%
Damage Against Animals +8.6%
Maximum Vampiric Health +18.7%
Maximum Stamina +17.3%

Its strongest advantages are the bonuses to Vampiric Health, Stamina, and passive Activation Charge restoration.

Activation Charges are particularly important because Coen’s active Vampirism abilities draw from the same shared Charge system used by other ability categories. Increasing passive restoration helps make those abilities available more consistently.

The additional maximum Stamina is useful both during combat and while using stamina-dependent traversal abilities.

Is the Coat of Darkened Scales Worth Using?

The Coat of Darkened Scales is particularly strong for players who spend a lot of time fighting as vampire Coen at night.

The +18.7% Maximum Vampiric Health improves his survivability, while +17.3% Maximum Stamina gives you a larger resource pool for movement and combat.

Its +17.3% Passive Activation Charge Restoration is arguably the most useful build-focused bonus, especially if you’re regularly relying on Vampirism Active Abilities.

The +8.6% Damage Against Animals is more situational, but it provides an additional advantage when dealing with wildlife.

Swordmastery-focused builds may eventually favor armor with bonuses more directly suited to human combat, but for a character centered around Coen’s supernatural abilities, the combination of Vampiric Health, Stamina, and Charge restoration makes the Coat of Darkened Scales an excellent legendary armor option.

Since the Split Rock map itself isn’t required, players building heavily into Vampirism can also pick up the Coat of Darkened Scales relatively directly by heading into Rockfalls and digging beneath the two leaning boulders.
