Summary

    • Baldur’s Gate 4 is in the works as John Hight, Wizards of the Coast president, officially confirmed.
    • Larian Studios definitively stepped back from the franchise as they announced to focus on their original projects.
    • Considering the development cycles for major RPGs, fans may get Baldur’s Gate in 2030 or later.

Good news for Baldur’s Gate fans! After the massive success of Baldur’s Gate 3, fans are wondering whether there’ll be a sequel to the game. John Hight confirmed a continuation of the series is in the works but without Larian Studios’ touch. Here’s everything to know about the upcoming Baldur’s Gate 4.

Official Confirmation from Wizards of the Coast

A recent interview with Game Business with John Hight, Wizards of the Coast president, revealed the confirmation of Baldur’s Gate 4. When discussing the franchise’s future, Hight shared that they’re indeed going to do a successor.

It was the first time that Wizards of the Coast acknowledged they intend to continue the Baldur’s Gate series. This will mark the fourth installment of the game, making millions of players excited. Since 2023, Baldur’s Gate 3 success earned approximately $1.6 billion in overall revenue

Who’s Studio Will Take The Lead

While it is exciting news, many are wondering which developer will take charge of the creation of Baldur’s Gate 4. Despite the incredible success, Larian Studios definitively stepped back from the franchise. In 2024, Larian CEO Sven Vincke confirmed during the Game Developers Conference that they would now pursue original projects.

With this, they’re unlikely to take charge in the development of the upcoming sequel. Several studios may work on the said project, including their in-house game development studio. However, it is currently working on an untitled D&D video game.

Alternatively, they may outsource development to a third-party studio as they have a history of working with different developers. BioWare, Black Isle Studios, Snowblind, and Atari are among the studios they worked with.

Expected Development Timeline For Sequel

Baldur’s Gate 4 won’t be easy given its complexity and scale. For Baldur’s Gate 3, it took Larian Studios over six years and approximately $100 million to develop. This set a high bar for production values and content depth of the franchise.

Now, industry analysis suggests that it might take 3-7 years of development time for triple-A RPGs with 300-500 full-time employees. They’ll need to exhaust a lot of resources in the development of the sequel.

Also, Wizards of the Coast would need to first select a developer for the proper development of the title. A realistic window will be around 2030 or later, considering the usual turnaround time for major RPG projects.

Challenges Facing the Development Team

There is a massive pressure for whoever takes on Baldur’s Gate 4 development to deliver a worthy successor. Right now, the community has mixed reactions regarding the development after knowing Larian might not work on the project. They’re expressing skepticism about whether other studios can capture the magic of Baldur’s Gate 3.

It’ll be challenging for the next development team to overcome these expectations. They must maintain the high production values, narrative depth, and technical innovation that Baldur’s Gate 3 offered. Moreover, the studio will need to establish its creative vision while respecting the franchise’s legacy.

Final Thoughts

While Baldur’s Gate 4 announcement came as exciting news, it’ll be a long patience game for the developers and fans. It’ll be hard to follow the success of Baldur’s Gate 3, considering the change of development team and studio. Besides the confirmation, Wizards of the Coast has yet to share details of the project in the future.
