Assassin’s Creed Shadows Update Brings New Quest and Combat Changes

The latest Assassin’s Creed Shadows update introduces Nightmare Mode—a difficulty setting that completely changes how players approach combat and stealth. Perfect dodges and parries no longer put enemies in a vulnerable state, requiring better timing and aggression in fights. Red-glowing attacks deal full damage even when blocked, and enemy types like Ronin or Shinobi will now dodge special abilities unless staggered first. Resource management also becomes stricter, with slower cooldowns, fewer rations from crates, and reduced tool recovery.

In stealth, guaranteed assassinations are removed, and base assassinations deal less damage. Enemies detect the player much faster, and louder movement in shadows adds risk. These changes make stealth far less forgiving than in other modes, pushing players to carefully assess their routes and enemy awareness.

New Quest, New Ally: Meet Ruvino

Players gain access to a brand-new quest shortly after unlocking Yasuke and completing the Way of the Blacksmith mission. This mission introduces Ruvino, a new ally voiced by Robbie Daymond of Critical Role. After completing the quest, Ruvino becomes a powerful combat companion. His upgrades include:

  • A bleed-triggering kidney shot

  • A guard-breaking final attack

Not only does Ruvino deal impressive damage, but he also pairs well with bleed-focused builds. Many already consider him the most effective combat ally in Shadows. Although the quest doesn’t provide gear rewards, players do receive XP, mastery points, and a free Critical Role banner for their hideout.

Quality of Life Updates and VFX Options

This update includes highly requested visual tweaks and interface options. Players can now:

  • Turn off the black-and-white filter for assassinations and ability use

  • Toggle headgear visibility during cutscenes

  • Customize enemy indicators during combat

The VFX menu allows players to remove parry flashes, vulnerable-state glows, and stealth silhouettes to create a more immersive HUD experience.

Ubisoft also added camera controls while on horseback. By holding a button, players can zoom out for a wider view of their surroundings. This only works in rural or open areas, reverting to default when entering towns or cities.

Open World Wanted System and Bug Fixes

Ubisoft implemented the first version of a new open-world wanted system. If players attack soldiers outside restricted zones, they eventually become “wanted,” triggering two guardian spawns. However, there’s no visible wanted meter yet, making escalation hard to gauge. NPCs still don’t trigger alarms when attacked in towns, limiting the system’s impact.

Several long-standing bugs are now resolved:

  • Katsu can now be recruited as an ally after completing her mission prompt

  • The Dead by Daylight crossover bug that left mission notes on-screen has been fixed

  • Enreo mask issues have been addressed—your hair color now remains consistent, though hiding and revealing the mask may temporarily affect gray hairstyles

Players can now experiment with different stealth tactics under tougher visibility and detection rules. Combat feels more intense with reduced ability reliance and stricter timing windows. The new ally system adds tactical variety, especially for bleed-focused builds. Ubisoft continues to respond to player feedback with meaningful mechanical and interface improvements. Also, the visual settings menu now gives players full control over how immersive or minimal they want their HUD to be.
