Apex Legends 7th Anniversary May Deliver Apex 2.0

Apex 2.0 rumors have been circulating for months, but recent EA earnings calls have provided new insights into its potential future. Back in October 2024, EA executives stated that a complete rebuild of Apex Legends was “unlikely.” The company instead planned to focus on player retention and systematic changes rather than launching a direct sequel.

During that call, when asked about a possible Apex 2.0, the CEO explained that “version two” updates for live service games rarely outperform their original versions. This led many to believe Apex 2.0 would never happen.

However, EA shifted its stance during the February 2025 earnings call. The CEO revealed that the team is working on “a more meaningful update to Apex’s broader game experience” and confirmed this would not launch alongside Battlefield 6. This update has since become the center of Apex 2.0 discussions.

Battlefield 6 Impact and Apex 2.0 Release Window

With Battlefield 6 set to release in October 2025, EA’s strategy for Apex Legends is becoming clearer. Since EA wants to avoid competing with its own blockbuster, the company appears to be holding Apex’s largest update until after Battlefield 6 settles.

Based on historical trends, the earliest possible release window for Apex 2.0 is February 2026, during the game’s 7th anniversary. Anniversary events have historically delivered significant player boosts. For example, Season 16, Apex’s anniversary season, recorded its highest player count ever on Steam.

If the update does not land in February, the next likely target could be Season 30, which is expected later in 2026. This timeline aligns with EA’s stated goal of spacing out major content drops across its flagship franchises.

What Apex 2.0 Could Include

Speculation around Apex 2.0 suggests the update may focus on community-driven content rather than a complete rebuild. Some theories proposed shifting from the Source Engine to Unreal Engine, but Respawn developers have clarified that a full migration would be impractical. Instead, Apex may receive incremental engine upgrades for better visuals and smoother performance.

EA has repeatedly highlighted its growing interest in player-generated content across its portfolio. Fortnite has successfully integrated tools that let players create unique maps and game modes, and Battlefield 6 is also introducing robust systems for custom map creation.

Apex could adopt similar tools, enabling players to build custom maps, design new modes, and even experiment with Legend concepts. Adding these systems would create long-term replayability while allowing Respawn to focus on larger seasonal updates instead of constant micro-releases.

Why EA Is Investing Heavily in Apex Legends

EA has positioned Apex Legends as one of its long-term franchises with a planned lifespan of 10 to 30 years. Apex’s consistent ranking among top-played games globally reflects its value within EA’s live-service strategy.

In addition to the rumored Apex 2.0 update, EA’s president confirmed that discussions are underway about an Apex-themed film or TV series. The goal would be to expand Apex beyond gaming while maintaining the franchise’s tone and worldbuilding.

Interestingly, Apex has seen fewer large-scale updates in the past year, with the last major map addition, Broken Moon, launching in May 2024. This lack of new maps suggests Respawn may be reallocating resources toward a larger overhaul, potentially linked to Apex 2.0.

While EA has not officially announced Apex 2.0, the company’s messaging indicates that a major update is inevitable. Given the CEO’s statements, Apex 2.0 is more likely to evolve the existing framework rather than replace it entirely.

If EA introduces community creation tools and performance upgrades alongside new maps, Legends, and game modes, Apex could experience a massive resurgence in 2026. Until then, seasonal updates are expected to remain smaller as Respawn prepares for a significant content shift.
