Age of Empires II Patch Preview: Massive Meta Overhaul

The latest Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition Public Update Preview (PUP) is live, bringing significant mechanical improvements and balance changes that could reshape the meta before going live. This preview patch introduces new graphics, audio updates, and fixes—plus massive tweaks to pathfinding and farming that address long-standing community concerns.

Players can access the PUP via Steam using a test branch code, allowing them to explore upcoming adjustments before the official rollout.

Visual and Audio Enhancements Modernize Classic Units

This patch introduces minor but welcome graphical polish, including:

  • A new running animation for Jaguar Warriors.

  • Updated torch visuals for Tarkans.

  • Corrected color displays for herded animals post-death.

  • Fixes for invisible sheep and misplaced graphical overlays.

Audio tweaks include a revamped Tarkan attack sound, reduced ambient noise from Three Kingdoms units, and chicken volume normalization. A new pop cap alert warns players when they near their unit limit—thankfully, this can be toggled off in settings.

Farming, Pathing, and QoL See Core Revamps

Multiplayer responsiveness sees a huge leap forward with improved assisted farm placement, reducing ping-induced lag when placing multiple farms. Players can now farm more reliably around buildings like mills and pastures. Units moving in formation have better responsiveness, with fewer stalls or misclicks causing movement breakdowns.

Crucially, villagers will now attempt to “unstick” themselves more effectively. Other practical fixes include better idle unit tracking and improved siege unit behavior around tight spaces and elevation.

Balance Changes Hit Skirmishers, Rams, and Town Centers

Some of the game’s most impactful adjustments lie in unit balance:

  • Skirmishers now take 4 seconds longer to train (22 → 26), slowing mass production and addressing their overrepresentation in Feudal Age.

  • Siege Rams now take reduced damage from villagers, making them more viable investments during late-game pushes.

  • Town Centers receive a projectile speed buff (7 → 8) and improved firepower, discouraging reckless early-game dives.

The Flemish Militia gets its armor class tweaked to reduce vulnerability to ranged trash units, but a cost reduction may push the unit into problematic territory. Conversely, Siege Towers and Treadmill Crane see significant cost reductions, making them more appealing mid-game options.

Civilization Overhauls Rebalance Meta Across Ladders

The developers have heavily adjusted civ-specific bonuses and unique units:

  • FranksThrowing Axemen are now viable again, with +2 range from Bearded Axe, reduced training time, and a cheaper elite upgrade.

  • Burgundians get cheaper Flemish Militia and less vulnerability to ranged trash units.

  • GurjarasCamel Scouts are now spammable with drastically reduced train times and increased base attack. This could elevate them from obscurity to dominant pocket units.

  • Sicilians and Spanish received focused changes to address Castle Age fast rush abuse and unit accessibility, including food/gold cost swaps and expanded tech options in Donjons.

  • Poles get a boost with a return to 10% instant food collection from Folwarks, potentially restoring their eco power.

  • Hindustanis now have a more appropriately priced Shatagni upgrade (+2 range for Hand Cannoneers), making it a fairer late-game tech.

  • Ballista Elephants, Elite Mamelukes, and Rocket Carts receive nerfs to temper overperformance in specific matchups.

Nerfs were also applied to War Chariots, MagyarsMagyar Huszars, and RomansScorpions. Meanwhile, Persians’ Savar cost increases slightly, and Khitans’ Mounted Trebuchets now interact correctly with camel-related bonuses.
