Abyss Meta: Controller Breakdown – Valorant Agent Guide

Abyss is out in Valorant, and there’s a ton of new mechanics included in this map. From free fall to parkour movement, Riot has addressed the so-called “boredom” everyone complained about. At first glance, the map looks huge with a ton of angles to clear. The new meta changes to the duelists have also come into play with the new update. But we won’t be talking about the duelists in this post. Instead, we’ll look into the  “controller” role and the best picks among them. Keep reading to learn more about the best controllers for Abyss.

Astra’s Range as a Controller in Abyss is Clutch!

Astra has several advantages as she’s a controller who can capitalize on long rotation times. Her ability to place utility across the map is key for such wide spread maps like Abyss. For example, on the attacking side, players can use her abilities to quickly traverse the map. Positioning her stars slightly to the left can cover gaps effectively, similar to techniques used on Pearl’s B long.

Astra’s ultimate is particularly useful for post-plant scenarios. On this map, planting the spike and playing from safe positions to spam the spike will likely become a common strategy. You can spam through walls and hit the spike from various angles, making it challenging for defenders to defuse. The ultimate will also allow defenders to split the map, making it hard for attackers to push or retake a site.

One challenge for Astra and other Dome Smokers on the B site is determining where to place smokes. You might consider smoking off specific areas, but the size and shape of the map can make this difficult. For example, Astra’s smokes might not cover certain gaps fully, leading to potential exposure from multiple angles.

Brimstone the Post plant King of Controller?

Brimstone faces range limitations, especially when trying to smoke off areas from a distance. To smoke off B while playing from A, he must traverse a significant portion of the map. This limitation affects his effectiveness compared to other Controllers.

Despite these challenges, Brimstone’s post-plant utility remains a clutch ability. His molotovs and ultimate can secure post-plant scenarios, much like on Icebox, where his abilities are crucial for controlling the spike.

Viper’s Might be the Best Controller for Abyss on Attack

Viper offers effective area control with her walls and orbs. On defense, her wall placement can cover key choke points, and her ultimate can secure areas like A main. An effective defensive setup might involve placing her wall across key sections of Abyss and using her orb for additional coverage.

On attack, Viper’s walls allow for strategic pushes as a controller. A well-placed wall can obscure defender vision and provide cover for attackers to advance. For instance, a wall covering the back site of A can allow attackers to clear close corners and gain control of the site. Viper’s versatility makes her a strong controller pick on abyss, and her utility will likely be essential in both attack and defense scenarios.

Abyss Looks Like it was Made for Omen

Omen benefits from his teleportation abilities and flash, making him a versatile pick. His flash can be useful in various situations, both offensively and defensively. Omen’s ultimate can also provide strategic rotations, especially on a large map like Abyss. However, Omen lacks effective one-way smokes on this map. While other Controllers can place smokes to control specific areas, Omen struggles to find effective one-way setups. This limitation might affect his overall utility compared to other Controllers.
